Visually, I think you could actually work with his looks. Yes, he kinda looks slightly young, but he also has a slightly creepy face that he can channel (as seen in Gone Girl, f.ex.) and I think he's got a fitting face for a unibrow. I agree. I've never looked at him and thought 'Count Olaf!' but looking at him now, I can definitely see his appearance being a good base for Olaf; there are certain features which I think will work well.

I've been thinking about this and am cautiously optimistic. I originally thought Barney/Dr Horrible and that here's another Carry, but unlike Carry NPH is perfectly capable of doing creepy.

i agree with bandit, i mean, olaf isn't just some creep u guys. he's a *villain* and at times he can be pretty damn intimidating- neither of those qualities are really within nph's acting abilities as far as i can tell. even on "gone girl", at the end of the day, he's just a weirdo loser, not a real villain. in fact, rosamund pike totally out-creepied him in that movie, hell, she'd probably make a better count olaf

I mean, I guess it's also kind of up to the makeup team, because I CANNOT see NPH as some creepy old guy.

penne lol I like imagining that. But nobody said any of his previous roles serve as a blueprint for Olaf. Creepiness is just one aspect of Olaf that we've seen NPH can achieve. The intimidating villanous aspect is a different story, and I agree that he's not the type for that. At least part of that's in his voice, I think. It's too high and without any gravitas whatsoever. No amount of makeup can change that.

That's true- I hope he can pull it off. I've been waiting for this series forever, I hope the netorious villain isn't a terrible one.

I'm torn on this casting choice.
On one hand, I love Starship Troopers and Harold and Kumar.
On the other hand, it's potato ing Neil Patrick Harris playing Count potato ing Olaf.

I was shocked first when I saw he would be Olaf (when I saw he was going to be on it I assumed he'd be Lemony). Now I think it is a good decision.
After seeing him in Rocky Horror Picture Show I'm more sure than ever that he's a great, versatile actor. As a SFX makeup artist wanna be, I can say that he has the features to be Olaf. Also, the voice, the acting, the contexture (he's potato ing skinny and tall!).
Also, is it confirmed that it'll be a 13 chapters season? Does that mean that every book will have a chapter, or they plan to do more seasons? I'm nervous about it.

Sneering and shuddering is exactly what I did when I heard the news. What a coincidence.

The character of Olaf is pretty open to interpretation, really. Over the 13 books his character changes a bit, along with the whole tone of the books. As long as Handler was involved in casting, I'll show some faith. However there's always that fear that there will be disagreements, incompatibilities, and production will fail to mesh. Didn't the "True Blood" producer just leave?
Also it's obvious NPH was a bit of a theater kid growing up, and I'd imagine Olaf was too.....
