Put me in the hopeful camp. It's a different role for him, but there's nothing to say he can't do it. There was a time when no one thought any vercital actor could handle anything aside from their...let's call it entrance genre. Also, based on the bulk of his prior work, NPH would be good at the "I'm the best thing since sliced bread" side of Olaf. His natural speaking voice (because he could presumably alter his voice) could be used to good affect there.

I think it could work.

Nothing less than NPH giving a brilliant performance as Olaf when the show finally comes out will convince me that this is a good idea tbh.

I've seen doubt in regards to him being accustomed to comedic performance and that his voice possibly doesn't have the depth of Olaf's. I'd like to provide the performance that I noted yesterday, from American Horror Story. I don't mean to say that he acts/looks like Olaf here, or his voice is Olaf-like. I just think it suggests that he's able to be serious, threatening and assume a deeper, masculine tone in his voice... (The entire video is a spoiler. Only the first half is really relevant. The second half is graphic/18+) www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVoPsPWwLPEOn the note of his voice, there's the assumption that a mean male villain should have a deep voice. I think this actor can achieve that but a higher tone can be just as creepy when played right. Perhaps he will provide aspects of the character that work very well and that most people have never considered. After all, there's only so much canon to base Olaf on, in terms of description. Maybe he will be campier than in the audio-books and movie, but one can still be incredibly sinister in that (additionally, note how Helquist tends to pose him: i.imgur.com/0YO3ng7.jpg He's often quite feminine and sly, rather than brutish). Or perhaps he will be more of a traditional male villain. My point is just that Neil Patrick Harris probably does have the credentials to pull the role off well- I think it depends more on how Olaf is directed/written. With Handler on the team and responses to Carrey's performance, I think it'll be well-considered. Also, with the right nose... imgur.com/6j7sBwSEDIT: He certainly has the cheek bones: assets.rollingstone.com/assets/2014/article/11-things-you-learn-after-spending-a-week-with-neil-patrick-harris-20140512/18825/_original/1035x692-20140512-nph-x1800-1399920694.jpg

^ I had not seen AHS, but after watching that video I saw the same thing I had seen glimmers of in Dr. Horrible and HIMYM; he is capable of going dark when he wants to, it's just a matter of the role being written right. As far as his tenor voice and general teddy-bear-like natural demeanor, I can see that working to good effect, after all he does spend a great deal of the series in disguise and fooling everyone but the Baudelaires; rather than being super obvious and the adults just being comedically stupid, I can see him being actually convincing as a good person, until he is out of earshot and alone with the Baudelaires and then his whole face changing to that of a villain while growling out threats, and then they try to get an adult's attention and he's back to his golden boy performance.

Very good point about the personality switch, Linda.

Netflix should hire all of the 667 regulars to come up with a bunch of guidelines for how each character should be played. Well, I say hire, but I'm guessing most of us would do it for free.

Very true, very true. But isn't Daniel Handler going to be there? I hope so, that would make it 1,000 times better.

I can see him playing Dewey/Frank/Ernest, or Jerome or maybe even Charles. But Olaf? SERIOUSLY? ?!!!!!! The casting staff must've been high as a kite to make that choice!

Jerome would have been good- now I will only be able to see him as Jerome!

No, I think he'd make a terrible Jerome. Jerome is so modest and self-effacing; NPH is too flashy of a person to pull it off.

Some good points on this page, I think. Lorelai on young actors being typecast. Pevalwen sharing the video clip and the broad analysis about actor, character, and the importance of the writing/production. Linda's clarifications... a good Olaf should have a nice acting range and NPH can certainly show panache/charisma.
There's a lot we don't know and, as fans, it's our job to worry about this sort of thing! NPH sort of clicked for me, others are more concerned but overall some reassuring points, here!
Really curious how he'll look in costume! Hope they don't over do make-up, etc, just to Helquist him up.

Does anyone remember who Handler said his ideal Olaf was? There's a quotation floating around somewhere
