I understand there reasoning but I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed. I'm going to keep my fingures crossed though just in case they add it in post.

Oh yeah these are absolutely not stills from the show. For sure these are set photos. The show will still be graded darker and have VFX. So we'll see.

I'm disappointed that they're losing the smokecloud, but I can totally appreciate why they would; it would not by any means have been an easy image to pull off in live-action. I'd agree with previous suggestions that a smoky office and a one-time smoke-blowing effect will suffice.
The first image also appears to feature, I agree, Charles; in the second, Stephano's beard looks hilariously fake, as indeed it should, from this angle.
Odds are on us seeing Josephine and Shirley tomorrow.

Sir without smoke looks... Exactly as I had imagined, and that's, oddly, really very disappointing! While I appreciate the sleazy southern gent look, I think his unpronounceable name and unseen face really made his character. Without them, he seems very flat and generic. I'm hoping they add the smoke in post. Really am.
Also, if that's Charles, I'll be pleased. He always did come off as a sort of "Trophy Husband," so an age difference and dapper look are very fitting.

The only way I could seem them pulling off a smoke effect and even possibly compensating for what I imagine would be Netflix's typical subpar cgi is if they really stylize the world so that something that cartoonish doesn't feel out of place.
So we can keep our fingers crossed, but I won't, personally, condemn them if they leave it out.

Ahh I love getting all these new photos!
As much as I would love Sir's face to be hidden by smoke, I can absolutely understand why that might not be feasible/might look kind of strange on camera. If they do cover his face, great (although from the way his hair is quite carefully styled, I expect we will be seeing his face, or at least glimpses of it), but if they decided to cut that element, I understand why.
In regards to Stephano, I'm pretty sure his monobrow has been shaved off. I think, from looking at other photos, that it's dramatic and large enough to stick out from behind his glasses but it doesn't seem to be doing that so I'm pretty sure it's been shaved. I always imagined that Olaf didn't simply continue to shave it after TRR partly out of a love of creating new dramatic disguises and getting away with various methods of concealment, and partly because perhaps he might have thought that even the Baudelaires' clueless guardians might listen to the children if they pointed out that Olaf had shaved his monobrow before and, oh look, here was another person with no eyebrows at all ... (They probably wouldn't have, of course, but better safe than sorry, from Olaf's perspective.)

This honestly keeps getting better and better.
I think it's likely we'll find out how Sir is depicted in the show when the full trailer drops on Thursday (!!!). I would understand if they toned down the cigar smoke (though if the show has him smoking a cigar, I do still want there to be a lot of smoke) - you're not going to hire an actor to just obscure them behind a cloud of CGI smoke constantly.
I wonder why the reveal for who's playing Aunt Josephine is taking so long - but then again we also only just found out about Dr. Orwell. It makes it seem as though they're holding out on a big name. Alfre Woodard is very good, but I can't help but think that people will be somewhat disappointed (especially just when compared to Meryl Streep who was so utterly perfect for the character that it's hard to compare). Maybe Woodard's a good choice though, because she's so different. Still, nothing has been confirmed really. I'm hoping they haven't shot any Principal Nero scenes though, cause I desperately want Danny Devito to play Nero.
Either way, I think we'll be able to put a lot of theorizing to rest when we see the trailer. I assume there'll be a Lemony Snicket voice-over to introduce the Baudelaire orphans, imploring us yet again not to watch the show and listing all of the very frightening danger the orphans have to face - be it a man who wants to steal their fortune, an extremely deadly viper, realtors, or having to discover the difference between an optimist and an optometrist.

First it's Mr. Poe, then it'll be the androgynous assistant and Sir - who will be next for Netflix's ruthless fat-trimming adaptation?

This is the first time so far I feel disappointed with the show. I REALLY hope this is not the final version, because Sir without the smoke and showing his face so clearly is a complete fail to me. I wasn't really expecting CGI smoke all the time, but the camera taking him from behind or cutting his face in close-ups while he talks and only showing the smoke surrounding him. To me, the character (as the representation of capitalism) loses all the charms this way.

I have been studying the Monty picture and I'm very curious to what the paper Stephano is looking at. I wonder if this was created by mr Pow to warn the guardians against Olaf. And why he is showing it to Stephano. It will be interesting to see how they play up monty's know about Olaf. Be interested to see if snicketslueths thoery about Monty know Stephano is Olaf will come into play at all.
Ps I love Monty's mustache

It's obvious they'll add some smoke as there's none coming off that cigar in the picture, implying that it's just a prop. Anyways, I didn't expect his face to be completely obscured to begin with. It's a visual that works in a book, but on screen I don't think it holds up. I mean he'd have to be smoking like ten cigars to completely obscure his face and the second he entered an open environment it would all likely be blown away. Unfortunately, it's an almost cartoony gimmick in the book that has little real world application. Even in that one illustration of him you can still see quite a bit of his face.
I really like Uncle Monty's front yard, those snake shaped hedges are awesome. The overall art design of this world really impresses me, it's like a fairy tale set in the 40's. I can't wait to see Aunt Josephine and her house. Hopefully that's what we get tomorrow.

Since they're really expanding upon the VFD elements in the initial books, that would be the perfect way for them to do it. Although, I suppose if he doesn't show any hint of being in on it in the show, does that put the kibosh on Snicket Sleuth's theory? I mean, Handler is involved in the show this time around.

With Gustavo being a character and the on set picture of them seeing zombies in the snow and the maze from the teaser point that Monty being part of VFD in the show I would really love to see a smart Monty and not the naive Monty we saw in the movie. In the books it always seemd Monty knew more. so I hope that some of the fan thoeries will get more evidence which would be really nicely
