I wonder where the maze part comes in; an additional climax to TRR, where Stephano is trying to nab the children at the very last? Or will it come in-between Monty's death and Mr. Poe's arrival? I'm looking forward to being able to watch the trailer officially to get a better idea of what's going on. The kids aren't wearing pyjamas when they run into the maze, which makes me think it's BEFORE his death. Cuz don't they wake up to find him? Speaking of clothes, I love all the costume changes so far. Realistically, this should continue through book 8. From then on, they just have the same tattered outfits. But before, it makes sense they'd change. I imagine Prufrock will give them uniforms, so we shall see. I deeply want to see more Aunt Jo! We've heard from her the least. I'm also wondering if Shirley will trick Orwell too...maybe Orwell is just a mean lady Olaf uses.

Maybe, since their TVV-TGG outfits will be the ones they wear for the longest period of time, they'll be designed to evoke the illustrations from the books.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Aunt Jo a bit?

Am I the only one who doesn't like Aunt Jo a bit? That's why I want to see more of her...I'm not sold, but I want to like her. Movie!Jo was so perfect, I just want someone to be equally as good here.

I don't hate this interpretation of Aunt Josephine quite yet - I'd need to see much more of it, but I'll agree that it's hard to top Meryl Streep. Not only did she look amazing (for which we have to also thank Colleen Atwood doing her best costume work), but she knew exactly what to bring to the table. As an actress, she made so many well-informed acting choices that nailed the character. I think the "Wide Window" section of the film is absolutely its best part, so I don't expect that to be "outdone".
But like I've said before, I'm glad they didn't try to replicate the atmosphere of the movie too much, and especially went in a different direction here. I would of course have been ecstatic over Bernadette Peters (not in the least because after Into the Woods it would be the second role for Meryl and Bernadette to share). Alas, far too good of a made-up rumor to be true obviously.

Even when I loved Meryl in the movie, I'm not expecting her to do better or even similar. Aunt Jo's character has a lot of possibilities, but what I'm seeing... is like the anti Jo to me.

Alas, far too good of a made-up rumor to be true obviously. I just love the movie so much. Really, I do. And I agree, TWW was the most fleshed out section--likely because it was the largest action set piece. However, like you said, they really seem to be going in a very different direction than the film altogether, and I think they may have particularly emphasized that with Aunt Josephine just because Meryl is such a huge star, they knew they needed to do something 10000% different.

I feel the same way about a couple of the characters; where the movie nailed an interpretation of the character which Netflix was unlikely to be able to top, it's best to take that character in a different direction instead for the new version. A poor man's Meryl Streep would be the greater disappointment, I think - or at the very least, less interesting.

I think what was throwing me off for this interpretation was just the look. Admittedly, the pale, frail, goofy bun and granny glasses look is sort of just stuck in my mind for her, so to get a Josephine who looks and dresses any differently is kind of a shock. I will say now that I've seen her have an irrational freak out over seeing her own reflection I'm actually starting to like this interpretation, possibly a bit more than the book or movie. Looking back, Aunt Josephine's granny facade was kind of an old trope, so it's perhaps for the better they're going with a different look.
I think something similar was happening with Violet's pink dress. I had just gotten so used to the dark and gloomy look that I hadn't considered her dressing in any color that wasn't dark. Really, it was childhood nostalgia blinding me to the possibilities of each character.

Of COURSE the new trailer would arrive when I have no internet at home ...
But now I have watched it ... I just love the look of this show more and more. Violet is clearly taking such an active role which I'm SO. HAPPY. ABOUT. And every time they use dialogue from the books I get such a thrill. The comedy seems to have just the right tone for me -- 'In this economy children are lucky to have a job at all' -- and the sets just look wonderful. I'm more sold on Aunt Josephine now than I was before -- she seems so cheerful, which is certainly unexpected, but I'm glad to see she is still very easily scared. I think Sir seems just right -- obviously sans the cloud of smoke, but I don't think that would have looked as good on screen as it does in one's imagination.

Essentially Josphine is a paranoid women who is afraid of every thing. She's not a very difficult or nuanced character to play. Aside from her looking different and not being white, the latter being a complaint I've already seen popping up here and there, Alfre seems to be doing a perfect job of doing just that so I see no problem.
Most of the characters in the novel took on one trait and was resolutely rooted in that trait from beginning to end. I do think nostalgia plays in factor in thinking only a certain look or actor can play one of these roles. Again Josephine core components is grammar obsessed and paranoia and any competent actress should be able pull that off convincingly so Im not sure what exactly Alfre could be doing that isn't correct.
I often ask that "What is she not doing that makes you wary of her?" And lot of times I get a vague "I don't know she just doesn't feel right..." which is a bit suspicious.
So far we have only see her when she welcomes the Orphans and when she is swooned by Sham - so we are not seeing her when things get down and dirty. Not surprising since I'm sure Netflix would like to keep some of the more intense and nuanced scenes for the actual premier.
Remember she is the woman screaming "Villian!" and "Wretch!" in the Olaf trailer which I thought was the coolest part of that trailer. So they definitely are giving her character some spunk and Alfre alot to work with.

I think she just seems generally very, very cheerful and bouncy, which seemed at odds with her character from the books, but as I say, now that we've seen that her paranoia and fear is still present I no longer have any problems.

Also, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the lack of Sunny on this trailer. I was really looking forward to see her talking.

Well we have only seen her welcoming the children and being seduced by sham which would explain the smiles. However if you go back to the Olaf trailer the woman screaming Villian and Wretch at the end of that trailer is Josephine, confirmed by Netflix subtitles. So she does get more intense.
