Looking back at Fiona´s picture: she´s wearing the same cap as captain Widdershins on the painting (assuming it’s him)... more evidence of Fiona already being the captain of the Queequeg when the Baudelaires arrive and Widdershins already gone missing. Damn, it´s gonna be hard to not have a Captain Widdershins portrayal... but we´ll see how it works. I don't think that picture is evidence really. We have no context as to when that picture takes place in the story, it could just as easily be from the second half of the book when he goes missing. I can't really take the audition tapes as proof either, as we know from the past that they don't always reflect the actual shooting script.

Edit: The comment above came after I sent the first message.
The audition tapes seem to suggest it's Herman Melville. And if (and only if this audition script means anything) when Fiona points to whatever she points to as Widdershins (which probably is the Barry Sonnenfeld picture) it could mean there is never a Captain Widdershins as I don't think Barry would play Widdershins and Ike.

It's also worth noting that Fiona being captain of the Queequeg initially does not mean that we won't get *any* Widdershins portrayal - the adaptation has already featured many scenes set in the past and is clearly on track to provide more. They may well throw us a bone by letting Widdershins be a one scene wonder in one such cutaway, giving us enough so that we can picture what a more faithful adaptation would be like while allowing them to make the plot changes they deem necessary to the actual story.

Barry Sonnenfeld has already 'played' multiple different characters via the portrait and photo cameos he makes in almost every episode, so I don't see why the show wouldn't continue that tradition in season 3. :Edit: If I'm being honest, the removal of Captain Widdershins (potentially) and Bruce (likely) have been the 'big' changes I've cared least about up to this point. Given the amount of added story material that's going to appear in the show's adaptation of the (already pretty dense) last few books, I'd rather they drop characters who, while entertaining, ultimately go nowhere, than have every episode feel overstuffed. I obviously can't know this for sure, but I get the impression that one of Daniel Handler's goals as the show's head writer has been to change a lot of the plot points from the book series that ended up getting dropped or retconned in subsequent volumes.

And to think I was worried about them toning down the Carmelita. It looks incredible.
I'm also assuming that the arrangement of individuals in the concept art doesn't necessarily reflect the script, but that's mainly because of a few oddities that don't quite make sense.

You're correct. Usually people in concpet art of places are there to show scale, not necessarily a mock up of a final shot!

The Scottish Sun just released an interview with Daniel Handler and in it, he talks a little bit about the show: Daniel’s relationship with execs on the movie, which also starred Scots comic Billy Connolly, were strained — but so far his involvement with the Netflix series seems more positive. Although the writer, who is also a successful musician, reckons it’s still a lot more simple sticking to books. He says: “It is very difficult to work in such an expensive and collaborative medium — it is much, much easier to write a paragraph describing a lake than it is to build a lake for actors to boat around in. “But it is always interesting to see what the finished adaptation is like.” And the author says that the small-screen version is helping youngsters return to the written word. He jokes: “In the case of the Netflix adaptation, I’ve heard from a number of families who are enjoying the show and then read the books together, so I seem to have contributed to a rise in depressive households. Clearly, my work is done.”

These images all look fabulous. I'm so excited that we'll be able to see this all so soon, but also rather sad that after this ... That's it for the show. Also, I sincerely hope they haven't dropped Widdershins -- he's one of my favourite secondary/tertiary/whatever-level-he-is characters. I'm going to have to do my best to resist looking through TIHOSO when it's released in order not to spoil anything like this for myself.

The thing is, though, I'm not sure why they'd release a book you'd have to avoid reading in order to not get spoiled for a show that hasn't come out yet.
