If you wanna talk about deep voices check the Mr. Poe in the French version... youtu.be/-TbO_6yPB6UThe Lemony is very soothing, I must admit.

And as a native French speaker, I must say those lyrics are… clumsy. They keep dropping syllables to make the lyrics fit, which gives the impression of low-class speech for even Lemony. Which is a bit problematic for VFD. Bleh. Even if there are some good wordplays in there.

All this talk has made me curious if the foreign language dubs follow the translationed versions of the books, or if they're wholly new localizations?

All this talk has made me curious if the foreign language dubs follow the translationed versions of the books, or if they're wholly new localizations? I haven't watched the whole series in French, but as far as I can tell, they kinda pick and choose. Like they keep Sunny named "Prunille" but they have Aunt Jospehine back her name (she as Tante Agrippne in the books). The books had VDC for VFD but I think the show kept VFD.

As a German and very much used to the German voices (despite knowing the original voices) I must say that they translated the lyrics really well (despite having one letter less for "Count") and I personally think the voices are chosen well. It is very obvious that they had the characters in mind, rather than simply choosing someone who sounds like the actor's real voice, with the exception being Olaf's voice, as they used NPH's standard dub voice. Lemony's speaking voice actually sounds really good, in my opinion, and comfortable to listen to, he's just not that good at singing. And I personally think Mr. Poe's dub voice fits him perfectly. The only voice I am not too happy about is Carmelita. On the other hand, she's not easy to dub. They used adults for all children. It's also obvious with Klaus, but less so in season 2, because Louis' own voice had aged so much.
If you're curious how they talk:
The trailers for the first season don't use the final voices so I chose this one.

Also on the subject of the soundtrack, John Bobek, who protrayed the Bearded Man in THH, has a YouTube channel and has posted this:
See also his cover of That's Not How the Story Goes:
On a mostly-unrelated (a word which here means this was suggested by YouTube after I tracked down the two above videos), this (wholly unofficial, this time) accordion/cello medley of tunes from Season One is also really good:

Now that we know Olivia Caliban is an orphan, does this say anything about her relationship with Friday and Miranda and possibly the Widdershins? We don't know for sure that she's an orphan, just that she thinks she is. The show might very well reveal that Miranda and Thursday Caliban (Miranda Caliban's unseen husband) are, in fact, her parents. :Edit: In fact, it might be a very good way to twist the narrative knife; Olivia sacrifices herself in part because V.F.D. and the Baudelaires are the closest things to a family she thinks she has, never knowing that her parents are alive. While her family go to their probable graves in an attempt to reach her on land, never knowing that she's dead.

I find this rather improbable. The usual view has been that Olivia is Friday's aunt, being either Thursday's sister, or possibly Miranda's, if she has resumed her maiden name. It's true that well-spaced-out families are not unknown in VFD circles, so it's possible that she could be Friday's sister, but not likely, I'd have thought.
Bear in mind also that according to the books, Thursday is back on the mainland and in touch with VFD - Kit had coffee with him last week.

Well I think that it's also worth bearing in mind that according to the books, Olivia Caliban was not a lonely Prufrock Librarian who got recruited into VFD by Jacques Snicket; joining him in personally tracking down the Baudelaires and the Quagmires, only to be captured by Count Olaf, subsequently escaping to Caligari Carnival after giving Esmé Squalor the location of the Sugar Bowl. The idea I was proposing was merely the way I would go about adapting those characters' story arcs in light of the show's heavy changes to Olivia's character.
