By the time of ATWQ the Great VFD Schism had already taken place. The new members of the fire extinguishing part no longer received tattoos. This includes people like Esme, who was already introduced to us wearing only a lettuce bikini (which the Netiflix series didn't show), and she didn't have a tattoo, or would easily be stopped at hotel D. Probably Bertrand and Beatrice didn't have tattoos either. for their children had never seen anything like this before, not even when Beatrice took off her sandals and plunged into a spring with her children. If she hid the tattoo with makeup, it's likely her kids would notice. At the time of the Great Schism, Kit was about 4 years old and the D. brothers were about 5 years old. Lemony was just a baby when taken by orginal VFD, and received the tattoo. Lemony's original family was very rich, and he was taken to another family, where he was raised by other parents. It is these parents Lemony remembers. These foster parents were members of the original VFD, and gave Lemony, Kit, and Jacques the tattoo. Then there was the Great Schism, and Lemony, Kit, and Jacuqes were captured by the extinguishing side. This must have been for their protection, as the incendiary side was also kidnapping children. Lemony's VFD training began, and he was able to return home to his adoptive parents (whom he believed to be his biological parents) a few times. Due to VFD schemes, Lemony was eventually taken to other foster parents. Has Olaf been kidnapped too? I do not know. He entered VFD before the Great Schism and so had the tattoo. Probably when Olaf was 7 years old the Schism happened. Beatrice had known Olaf since before that time. That's why I believe they went to primary school together. When a recruiter on the VFD fire extinguishing side came to the school, they invited Olaf and Beatrice to participate in VFD. Olaf's father allowed him to be taken to the fire extinguishing side with a purpose in mind. He would be a double agent, and one day would destroy VFD. Beatrice was also called. She said to Olaf, "You will fail." As she discovered the wicked plans of Olaf and his father. Probably the fact that Olaf's father was an evil person was the cause of his execution. He is the old Count quoted in LSTUA.
The incendiary side had placed undercover agents in various places: in the Daily Punctilio group of editors, in the police, in the members of the supreme court, even as health professionals.
During VFD training, Olaf behaved like a bad boy. But oddly enough, Olaf liked it when he became an actor. He still had the evil plan in mind, but was asleep while he could act. Sebald invited Olaf to participate in one of his films, Zombies in the Snow.
The years went by, and Olaf was under pressure from his secret associates to do something to harm VFD. Finally, he did a play that aimed to steal audience members. Lemony made a bad review of the play. And because of that, Olaf flushed with fury, and put his plan into action: Destroy VFD. The first one he was going to kill was Lemony, because of bad criticism. The second he was going to kill was Beatrice, because she knew his plan, and she had said he would fail. Olaf could not kill them. Lemony fled abroad. But around the same time, Gregor A. was cultivating a deadly fungus that could be used to kill Olaf, and others. Therefore, Olaf and his associates destroyed A.A.
At the same time, there was an aggravation of the orginal Schism,
for the cultivation of a weapon of mass destruction was not well regarded by many members of VFD. After all, the reason for the original Schism had been exactly the use or not of weapons, for Ishmael abandoned his weapons during the Great Schism.
But Gregor had another card up his sleeve. He had a whistle that controlled the Great Unknown. Knowing he could die, Gregor A. handed the whistle and some of the deadly fungus to Esme, who was her trusted friend or relative. Esme put the whistle in a sugar bowl. Lemony returned from abroad, and allied with Beatrice in a plan to steal this sugar bowl, as Esme was unreliable. They succeeded, but the result was that Esme passed Olaf's side deftly. The sugar bowl's secret kept the incendiary side quiet, for if they attacked, there were people on the fire-extinguishing side (Lemony and his associates) who were willing to counterattack with lethal force, using the whistle inside the sugar bowl.
She even used some of the deadly fungus to force some VFD members to do her will. But VFD managed to capture this sample of the fungus Esme had at hand. But instead of destroying Esme's fungi, Lemony and his associates re-cultivated the fungus in GG, after all these fungi might one day be needed. But first, it would be necessary to find a cure for the fungus itself. Beatrice and Bertrand developed this cure on the island. Since the fungus re-grown at GG and the cure were part of the same project, Beatrice wanted to tunnel the island to A.A. But she couldn't. The plan involved healing the associates, and releasing the poison into a previously trapped environment. Thus all enemies would be eliminated at once. But of course, sugar could also be used in place of mushrooms. When the plan involving the fungus ceased to work, using the sugar bowl to summon TGU became the best option, to destroy the enemies at once in Hotel D. And so a location near the sea was needed.
