Evidently Esme's career was a play from her point of view. She, like Beatrice, was an actress. Like Beatrice, Esme married a man she didn't really love. And just like Beatrice (I think), she has abandoned this man and all her fake life to be with the man she loves. The difference is that Esme didn't kill Jerome in the process.

Did she ruin her career, though? The Daily Punctilio merely reported that she was kidnapped (TVV p. 4), and by TPP she's able to appear openly in her own character again. But Jean Lucio is quite correct in stating that Esmé was willing to give up a great deal for love - and, I suspect, for fashion.

I don't think she really loved Olaf because I don't think she was capable of loving another person, not even Carmelita. I think she just wanted a life of crime more than she wanted her career.
