I have a hard time believing this. If the parents were villains, I don't think the Baudelaire siblings would have as good of manners as they do. I mean, I know there are slick villains who act like they are decent and charming people but really aren't, but the Baudelaires seem pretty genuine. And if the parents were evil, I don't think Snicket would bother to report on the children and try to clear their names. And they show allegiance to their friends and put their friends' needs above their own. Villains and, I'm guessing, their children don't do that.

There is no noble side to VFD ... This is one of the most striking lessons of ASOUE. Which would be to say that even well-meaning and well-educated people are capable of evil because humans have a vile side to themselves. Human-oriented organizations will not be perfect, and some people will feel victims of these organizations, even if the organization has good values. In addition, individual members of these organizations will sometimes place their personal interests above the interests of the organization. I don't think Baudelaire parents are villains. I think they are just humans being part of a human organization, and as such they will do bad things from time to time either on their own or in the name of the organization. Think of their killing someone on the opera night.

Being well read does not assure being noble, and I would extend that to being polite does not make you a good person. It would have been a good plot twist. all the good things we heard from them, are said by close friends and former lover. I know the concept of chef salads it's important in the series, but that night at the Opera plus Olaf saying he knows secrets that could destroy them make me think they leaned more to villany.

Actually Isandthebooks, I'm currently trying to develop a theory that implies that Beatrice and Olaf were dormant agents in VFD. That is, they were placed by the incendiary side as children, in order to exterminate VFD from the inside out in the future. However, Beatrice fell in love, and the plans did not go as well as the incendiary side planned. But her love led her to commit her husband's murder. Actually, I think I'll stop calling it Theory, and call it Fan-Fic ... maybe I can do well doing Fan-fic after all ...

Actually, I think I'll stop calling it Theory, and call it Fan-Fic ... maybe I can do well doing Fan-fic after all ... There are a great many ideas held up as "theories" which might be better characterised by the title of fanfiction; and with fewer objections, too.
