Due to my updates on the thinking about TGU, I thought it was good to write a text about sugar, taking into account the recent deductions.
There are several things that make me believe that inside Esme’s sugar bowl there was a whistle that could control the giant question-mark animal. First, Captain W apparently knew what was in the sugar bowl. He first expressed fear of the question mark shape seen in the sonar. He believed that this point was a submarine according to his own words. TGG chapter 5:
“Aye! Think of the crafts we saw on the sonar screen! Think of Count Olaf’s enormous submarine, and the even more enormous one that chased it away!”
This means that Captain W was definitely afraid of the submarine, and those who controlled it.
On the other hand, in TE, Captain W chose to go to one of the question mark entities.
Kit wasn’t sure what that entity was, an animal or a submarine. She referred to the entity with vague terms and as “thing” and “that”. But beyond that, she didn’t know if the entity had saved or killed Captain W and others. On the other hand, Captain W had enough confidence to move toward the entity. If he had believed it was the submarine, he would have fled. So he believed it was the animal, and he believed it not based on his eyes. He and Kit saw the same thing, but deduced different things. Why? The answer can only be “because they had different information”. Captain W knew that the real SB that belonged to Esmé had been thrown from VFD headquarters, had stopped at GG and that a female swimmer had taken the sugar bowl there. On the other hand, Kit believed that the real sugar bowl was coming through the crows. She believed that the scenario where Olaf got his hands on the sugar bowl was almost as bad as the scenario where Olaf got his hands on the deadly fungus MM.
So consider the following possibility. From Kit’s point of view, the moment she saw the question mark-shaped entity she visualized in her mind several disastrous options: She thought, 1 - “this entity could be the sea-beast-shaped submarine. If is the submarine, the entity is here to kill us, because its occupants are worse villains than Olaf. ” 2 - “This entity may be the ferocious animal acting on its own. In this case, if the entity is hungry, the animal will devour us.” 3 - “This entity may be the ferocious animal, but it may be being controlled by Olaf or one of his supporters. After all, the SB may have stopped at Olaf’s hands. If this is the case, the animal could kill us for receiving a command for that. ”; and finally 4 - “There is a chance that my friends could get the SB and this entity is the animal being controlled by my friends.” What would you do if you were Kit and thought so? Surely you would run away, because it would be too risky to believe in option 4. On the other hand, Captain W knew that the real SB was in the hands of the swimmer. Captain W knew that the chances of the SG being captured at Hotel D were very low, as the vast majority were distracted by the arrival of the SG replica by the crows. Sure, there was a possibility that this entity would be a submarine, but Captain W certainly realized that in those surroundings it was the animal, not the submarine. What made him so sure? To me was that he had been in the presence of the ferocious animal when he left the Q submarine. The swimmer was there, with the SB in hand. And I believe she used the whistle inside the SB to summon the ferocious animal. Knowing all this, running toward the animal was the best option. This scenario fits in very well. If you remember that the mysterious TSS taxi driver was with a woman hiding in the trunk and carrying a wet item and a musical instrument in the car, it all fits very well. The woman in the trunk was the swimming woman. The item was the sugar bowl, and the musical instrument was the whistle. Capitain W thought: “The swimmer, leaving Hotel D, used the whistle to summon the animal, entered the mouth of the beast, went to the submarine Q and saved the day.” Or Captain W was wrong and the sub sucked them in and then killed them all, or made them slaves. But in any case, Captain W believed it was an animal being controlled by the whistle inside the sugar bowl. I prefer to believe that too. After all, one of the Q brothers shouted the name “Violet” as it was about to be sucked. I think he did it because he saw a woman inside, someone like Violet. Or even better, someone named Violet who was the namesake of Violet best known to us.
Oh, and please don’t confuse Esme’s sugar bowl with the item Lemony refers to in the secret letter in TSS. That item contains information, not things that are almost as bad as the fact that Olaf has access to a weapon of mass destruction. Oh, I forgot that detail. If the SB fell into Olaf’s hands, he would have access to a very powerful biological weapon, which was that animal. Something similar to what Hangfire wanted to do with BB. I don’t know if the question mark animal is the same as the BB. Maybe yes maybe no. But it does not matter. It is an animal that can be controlled by sounds. Just like the eagles of VFD. So you can deduce this mystery without using ATWQ as a reference.
