One of the minor overlooked characters from ASOUE, Sir from The Miserable Mill is probably the one that strikes me as the most mysterious.
The fact we never see his face or even know his real name only adds to the suspense.
But what do we really know about him?
Well we know for a fact that he was former Volunteer and financier but grew greedy and power hungry turning to the fire starting side before the events of ASOUE.
I've been recently researching through the original source material (books) and the Lemony Snicket Wikipedia page, and I found something very interesting.
Lemony hints that Sir is in fact Asian.
But what proof do I have on this you may ask? Well for one thing Mr Poe struggles to pronounce his name referring him to either Mr Wuz, Qui and Bek. He also states that his name is "very long and too difficult to pronounce".
Another thing is that he is said to be short, no taller than Klaus is. Now many may look at this as a racial stereotype towards Asians. But I don't think Daniel Handler was trying to offend anyone with this.

I would be very cautious about making any suggestion that a character is based on a racial stereotype - not least as Sir bears a far closer resemblance to a stereotypical western tycoon. Handler has also specifically stated that he avoided designating characters by race in ASoUE. I also think it would be difficult to read anything into Mr. Poe's attempted pronunciations given that they are all incomplete and all wrong. Edit: Also, I'm not sure where you're getting your information that Sir is a former volunteer and financier, either.

In my headcanon, Sir resembles Danny Devito.

People of many races have names that are difficult to pronounce. I'd actually say the group of whom that is most stereotypically true is Eastern Europeans.
I also don't think Sir was ever in VFD, though he did business with them. (Charles may have been - that seems to be deliberately ambiguous.) Nor do I think he's now on the fire-starting side: he is just an uncaring guardian.

Someone that nobody can see the face and cannot pronounce the name, being replaced by a treatment pronoun that indicates respect .... Where should Daniel Handler get this idea from?
