It is not difficult to conclude this. Kit knew there was something about that apple that could kill her baby while he was still in the womb. Someone told her that, and the original source of that information was certainly Beatrice or Bertrand.

In TBBRE we learn that a law was made that prevented apples from the island from being taken from there. Whoever could have created this law certainly possessed some kind of recognized authority over the island. Someone who was there, left there and then informed those who write books about laws about the law that had been imposed on the island on apples. Since Ismael has not left the island since the expulsion of Beatrice and Bertrand (and apparently no one has since left the island until the events recorded in TE) it is easy to deduce that the person who informed about this law was Beatrice or Bertrand.

The fact that they did this certainly served to inform Volunteers about the dangers of the apple. This was a medicine with an abortion effect and should be avoided by pregnant women. The question is, how did Beatrice know that this was a side effect? She never tasted the apples she made herself, because she knew about the possible side effect. Apparently apples are just a hybrid fruit with horseradish and apple. The side effect is certainly due to some substance formed because of the transgenesis between the genesis of the apple and the horseradish. Probably a gene was formed from the Non-coding DNA of both species.

As everyone knows, this part of the DNA does not form proteins. However, if by incredible awareness, the genetic fusion between the apple species and the horseradish species would add exactly the nucleotides in the correct sequence to indicate the beginning and end of a gene, and the sequence formed would create a stable, unknown and dangerous protein that attacks exactly the tissue that forms the umbilical cord or placenta or in some way contaminates the amniotic fluid making it harmful to the volunteers inside the uterus, in which case it would make sense that a simple hybridization would become problematic.

However, the chances of this happening in exactly this way are really very small. But the fact is that this is exactly what must have happened. But there was no way for Beatrice or Bertrand to know that this was going to happen.

Now we get to another important detail. Bertrand reported as it was important Beatrice to have guarded with him a little horseradish. This means that there was a possibility of the deadly mm fungus to be spread on that island, and that was the worst scenario. In other words, there were samples of MM on that island at the time when Bertrand and Beatrice were there. The right question is: "How did those samples come there?" E. Simpler response is that Beatrice and Bertrand took those MM samples to the island. This is because they needed to test the effectiveness of the medication that they were developing and verifying the existence of possible side effects.

I hope very much the real reason for the exoste day of those sheep on that island is for testing in animals to have been made. In this case, there was at least one abortion of an animal there on that island. But if that is not the case, I have to say that a human baby stopped coming to the world because of those experiences.

I want to highlight that Beatrice's true intensions and Bertrand on that island were hidden for a long time. They gave to understand that they arrived there for simple coicidence. However, Kit indicates that that island has a long history in VFD through her words. Thus, the simplest conclusion is that Beatrice and Bertrand went to the island of purpose, to find the cure for the Mortal fungus MM on an island. If they lose they lose control of the fungus, at least a large pandemic would not be formed, since the dead would be confined only on the island. The attempt to create a tunnel to AA, after creating healing, would certainly be to be able to transport apples more efficiently to a maritime facility.

Before I begin, I think it is an important element of the case, if not necessarily an informative one, that the island's departure ritual includes that "anyone who wishes to leave our colony indicates their decision by taking a bite of bitter apple and spitting it onto the ground" (p. 51).

False. Friday states (p. 51) that "No one has left since before I was born"; Friday is "perhaps six or seven" (p. 37), and Ishmael explains (p. 224) "Some time ago, two women sailed off with this very snake, and a few years later, a man named Thursday left with a few comrades." Ishmael's statements can be lies, but he made them in a context in which it was possible for the Baudelaires to subsequently verify those claims witho ther islanders, so they are probably true. Thursday cannot have left before Friday was conceived. Therefore, he left during Miranda Caliban's pregnancy, which means the last departures were roughly six or seven years ago - but either way, it means we have a minimum of five people (the two women, Thursday, and multiple comrades) who departed the island after the Baudelaire parents.

There is no evidence as to the sophistication of the equipment the Baudelaire parents employed. There is no evidence to disprove the possibility that they determined this effect independently of ever testing it.

We know exactly how Medusoid Mycelium had the potential of reaching the island, and for the same reason we can also be reasonably confident that it never did: The proposed passageway to Anwhistle Aquatics. As Ishmael explains (pp. 219-220): "They wanted to dig a passageway that would lead to a marine research center and rhetorical advice service some miles away." "The passageway was never finished [...] and it's a good thing, too. The research center was destroyed in a fire, which might have spread through the passageway and reached the island. And it turned out that a very deadly fungus was contained in that place. I shudder to think what might happen if the Medusoid Mycelium ever reached these shores." Again, Ishmael is unreliable, but the thrust of his evidence is corroborated by the Baudelaire parents themselves (p. 276): 'Ishmael's fearmongering has stopped work on the passageway, even though we have a plethora of horseradish in case of any emergency.' In short: There was no Medusoid Mycelium on the island, part of the reason for the island schism was the bare possibility that it might ever reach there, the horseradish store and the hybridisation with the apple tree was intended as a permanent precaution against such a threat.

Thus, the simplest conclusion is that Beatrice and Bertrand went to the island of purpose, to find the cure for the Mortal fungus MM on an island. There was already a known cure and they already had it. The botanical hybrid was to ensure a permanent supply at the specific junction point between the island and Anwhistle Aquatics.

You frame your theory in a manner intended to shock. But there is no evidence that the proposed termination ever took place.

Yes, it's true. I wrote without consulting The books, and my memory deceived me. I was on my way to work, and unable to consult the books. But in any case, a scenario in which Beatrice and Bertrand has access to a sophisticated mechanism for identifying accidentally generated components is very unrealistic. They seem to have done a simple hybridization, and there would be no reason to think that there could be any danger there, as neither apples nor horseradish are poisonous to babies in the womb.

The simplest explanation is that someone or an animal ate that apple and had an abortion. Of course, I think an even simpler explanation is that the process of hybridizing apples to horseradish had already started off the island, and somewhere off the island it had already been identified that the hybrid apple had abortive properties. In this case, Beatrice would have known about this since she started producing these apples on the island. Still, there was an abortion at some point. The fact that Kit knew this and would rather die than kill his daughter indicates that it was not a mere suspicion.

Edit - In any case, few people knew of the existence of the production of those apples on the island. And if some of the few people who left managed to inform the law book writers that there was a law on that island that served to prevent the removal of apples from the island, it is an indication that these people knew of the danger of those apples. That is the point of the argument.

And I'm still without the books ... But I think the way Kit stated why Beatrice never had apples of her own, gave the impression that someone had actually eaten that.
