i'm a little surprised this hasn't happened already, considering the number of editions Harry Potter has gone through, for example.
this Emily Gravett seems to draw cute fluffy animals, almost exclusively.

i'm a little surprised this hasn't happened already, considering the number of editions Harry Potter has gone through, for example. I theorize this is because of two major points. First is that previous Snicket repackaged books don't sell too well, "Who Could That Be at This Hour?" being the most obvious one. Secondly, Mr. Handler doesn't seem too keen on ASOUE. I think he has moved past the series and doesn't want it to become what Harry Potter is.

ATWQ has a huge amount geared towards former ASOUE readers, and he was heavily involved in the netflix show. i might even say he seems more comfortable now with the ASOUE "franchise" than he was during the height of the series. the sales problem does seem the likely answer, especially because Helquist's illustrations have a particular association with the series, being used in many international editions, etc.

These seem to be from the UK, yes? I’m curious what the availability will be in the US.
On the subject of Harry Potter, the two countries have slightly varied their approaches to those anniversary editions so it makes me wonder if that will be the case here as well.

I know of her, yes, but her style is so far removed from the sort of illustration I'm generally interested in that I've never examined her work much. It'll be interesting to see what she does with ASOUE though! Wish I'd got this commission lol, that would be a dream come true. But on the other hand, I feel sort of sad to think of the books with any illustrator other than Helquist. Got to disagree here Semblance! While he's moving away from the very rigid distinction between himself & Lemony Snicket, he seems very happy to discuss ASOUE and I'm happy to report that at the Cheltenham event, when someone asked what was his favourite book that he'd written, he brought up how much fun he'd had with TMM & TVV.

Secondly, Mr. Handler doesn't seem too keen on ASOUE. I think he has moved past the series and doesn't want it to become what Harry Potter is. People have been saying this since ?1, that Handler wants to distance himself from ASOUE. Yet ATWQ was hilariously reference heavy (reread FU:13SI, it's almost comical how much ASOUE stuff was previously in Stain'd), he was involved in the show, and his new musical seems to have at the very least the same tone as ASOUE and probably some actual connections. Poison for Breakfast is an outlier, yes, but not that much of one. It's a story about a contrived misunderstanding involving Lemony Snicket, where he defines words at the audience and delivers strange anecdotes. It's simply a more small scale plot than we're used to. I kind of feel like it's more accurate to say some fans want Handler to be done with ASOUE, because it lets us run wild. If I want to claim that Count Olaf and Mister Poe are the same person, I don't need to worry about Handler writing a book set after Olaf's death that has Mister Poe in it.
About these new books, it'll be really weird to see anyone other than Helquist illustrate ASOUE. How will this new artist set herself apart?

what's wrong with morman supreme all-talented brett helquist ): i wouldn't be opposed to someone with a more gothic style such as chris riddell, who did gaiman's graveyard book. if they finally got the opportunity to sort out the consitency of the vfd insignia, why put a standard eye on the cover 😭

for what it's worth, the Russian and Japanese editions have other illustrations, but they are modelled after Helquist.

Yeah, it's kind of bittersweet for someone other than Helquist to illustrate the books, but on the flip side it might be cool to see something new. I'm not keen on the art style for ATWQ, but a talented illustrator could be nice and I do wish ASOUE could have more editions. I hadn't heard of Emily Gravett until today, but I Googled some of her artwork and it kind of reminds me of Arnold Lobel. Not sure how well she can draw humans, but the general style could work if done in black and white. Also what happened to Helquist? It feels like the last thing he did was illustrate a new edition of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.

I probably didn't phrase my comment about Mr. Handler right. He certainly still cares about the series, what I was meaning to say was that he doesn't want to milk the brand for all it has. I suspect he doesn't want there to be a new package for TBB every year. I have never been too attached to Mr. Helquist's illustrations, and have disliked quite a few, so I am excited to see what the new illustrator will do. I hope she doesn't try imitating the originals. These seem to be from the UK, yes? I’m curious what the availability will be in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't available on the first hand market. We didn't get TBB's 20th anniversary edition, if I remember correctly.

Oh god, I just realized that it's only been a few days since Semblance got back and I was already arguing with him. Sorry!
