Well, this was completely unexpected. This seems like exactly the sort of task we should have expected for tomorrow, and the cover piece. The letter was difficult to read as it had at least one genuine error - and I too wondered if they were acknowledging the title leak. I think they might well have been.
Edit: There are 34 tasks in total, and 5 different types of task. If I have counted correctly, we have had seven V/VFDescribeds, seven VFDoors, and seven UCQuizzes, but only six VocabularyFDs and six CCommunications. Therefore, tomorrow's task will be either a VocabularyFD or a CCommunication. The former seems far more likely, as we had a CCommunication today.
Well, the last task is going to be anticlimactic.

Well, the last task is going to be anticlimactic. Is it? I can't wait for this last task. It appears that we have nothing more to gain. He's acknowledged that the title has been leaked. The last piece is sort of a throw-away, nothing vital to see. But I still think there will be something big tomorrow. I don't know what, but I'm certainly planning on being here at the stroke of midnight to find out.

While I'm naturally pessimistic, I will try to remember to get up even earlier than usual, so that I have time to complete everything before I have to go to school. Just in case.
I still think that today's task should have come tomorrow, though.

Ive been watching this thread for some time now... and i think ive figured out how they can keep the suspence for the last piece........ notice that the piece would have the authors name... and we can tell it ends in KET but could it be possible that it becomes KIT SNICKET or some other snicket family member?! Just a thought... And great thread! OMG that would be soooo interesting if that happened!!! It is quite strange how they didn't leave the man's face to last...I wonder who he is anyone, he definately isn't Olaf, as originally predicted, i don't think sir because his face would be disguised by the smoke wouldn't it, and I though sir was of larger build than that...

Yes, but in book 4 they describe Sir as being quite short.

Also, this person looks too sinister to be Mr. Poe, as well as plain not looking like him. Sir was short and fat and smoked cigars. Bruce had a chubbier, greasier face and smoked cigars. In fact, I don't think we've come across anyone yet who smokes a pipe. I'm pretty sure that this is a new character - he doesn't look like anyone who's been drawn or described before. Edit: He's not a counterfeit concierge, as he's not wearing a concierge uniform - the Baudelaires are the counterfeit concierge. And while I'm at it, he's not the man with a beard but no hair as he has hair but no beard.

He's got a pipe, not a cigar; that was unexpected. There's something oddly familiar about his appearance, but he's not a character from the series.
And I did spend a lot of time wondering if "flea" rather than "flee" was part of the code or not, but it's not a missing letter but an incorrect one.

The List is really bugging me. The list that the editor mentions, I mean. It makes me think that this book is going to be much more VFD-involved than the last. (I mean, it better be, but still.) Which is a total relief. If the Baudelaires stayed out of knowledge forever, so would we. *groan*
EDIT: Quick thought. What if the man w/ the top hat was wearing an Operagoer disguise? *raise one eyebrow*

That does look like the Operagoer disguise, but we still don't know who he is. Since he's right in the front of the picture, though, we'll almost certainly find out his identity. In the past, we've had a lot of new(introduced in that book) characters on the cover, but this one has the most unidentified characters seen at one time.

With the square jaw and nose, he reminds me of Fernald. I don't have it handy, but in the portrait from the Marvelous Marriage, he has that same square look to his face.

He does look a bit like Fernald, but seems to have more hair. In the MM portrait, we couldn't really tell what Fernald's hair looked like, but if he had hair like that man does, it'd probably be visible from under his hat.

He's subtly different from Fernald, though. He's older, and has different hair. I can see the resemblance, though. Maybe it's the real father of Fernald and Fiona. [/far-fetched]
And he probably is wearing the opera-goer disguise. I mean, pretty much anyone with a top hat can reasonably be suspected of that.
