In Grim Grotto, Mr Poe says he was sent a message from JS telling him to go to Briny Beach... but why? And who is J.S? Not Gerraldine that's for sure- even he isn't that stupid.
So looking at the J.S's we have:
Justice Strauss
Jerome Squalor
Jacques Snicket (dead as far as we know)
Jacob/Jake Snicket
This got me onto other things. Lemony says a few times it was a sense of de ja vous. HOW did Mr Poe know the Baudelaires were there the first time? Was this another message from J.S? Somebody must have known they were there or going to be...

Recently, we've had various events implying that Mr Poe is in some way connected to VFD. Personally, I think someone informed him about the fire on the day it happened, so he knew about it and went to the beach.
There is a spurious, tenuous way that Geraldine Julienne could become JS: the G in Geraldine is pronounced like a J, and she could have been using another last name, one starting with S, for some reason that I might think of later. Geraldine is a Punctilio editor, hence she knows Mr. Poe's sister, her reporter Eleanora Poe.

I dont think that Mr. Poe is directly connected to VFD. He might be and not even know it. Hes probably been lured to the bad side by Olaf on more than one occassions.

I wonder if Poe takes bribes from Olaf, in exchange for the location of the Baudelaires. Lulu is probably not reliable as an information source, as she just collects random documents.

The Daily Punctilio obviously doesn't shape up cause as of LSUA time they're publishing awful stories. The baudelaire parents sent their kids to briny beach the morning of the fire so mr. poe may have known that somehow. Or maybe he knew that's a place they often went and decided to look for them there. I dunno. But J.S. could be any of those that pg13 said except Jacques. Jacques is dead. The kids saw his body. But why was the message sent to mr. poe if the bauds weren't supposed to meet him at briny beach? That's the part that confuses me. No I don't think Mr. poe takes olaf bribes, he's had plenty occassion to hand the fortune to Olaf and see part of it passed to him under the table afterward and he hasn't done so. |

I don't think Poe is evil either. First off, I think in CC they make a reference to using Lulu to find the kids at VFD in book 7. They could just as easily have gotten that information from Poe if he were working for them. Second off, there isn't a second off.
If I had to guess, when the house burned down, he thought of places the children often went, and ended up at the beach. For all we knew he could have checked other places before going there, so it's not all that unlikely he'd eventually find them.

But how likely is it he would know? They said he was a close family friend, but I don't think close enough to find out where the kids spent most of their time.
I agree- he isn't part of VFD directly, I think he's being used as a go-between by somebody.

I belive that Mr. Poe coming was a bad thing, he tried to lure the children away from Kit. Perhaps a bad VFDer sent him there, knowing he would try to gather up the children.

There's a thought. Of course, there's a thing in the Unauthorized Autobiography... It's a whole chapter. The chapter's title: Why isn't Mr. Poe as helpful as he should be? I think his wife has something to do with it...
