Here's how I figured it out: I also deciphered the Sebald code on Page 47 as "I can't tell if you are in or enemies please respond". I think it was supposed to be "associates or enemies"; either Snicket or I made a minor coding mistake. Some have suggested that "in" refers to "in (my side of)VFD" or "in on the plan".

I thought the word "in" might indicate that it was Ernest who was speaking to them and not Frank. As we all know Esme frequently refers to what is in and out so maybe his use of the word in tells us he is on Esme and Count Olaf's side.

Darn you Snicket98! Of course, I'm happy that Carmy is gone, but Esme was hot and cool!

I myself am also glad that Carmelita is gone, she was just annoying and basically had nothing to do with the plot after book 5. Ill miss Esme though, she was funny and "in".

Esme was... blah. She might've been halfway decent in book 6 but after that- no. SHE ALMOST WRECKED THE SSHAMH! *loves that thing* Plus those stilleto heels were ridiculous. Carmelita was downright annoying from the second she appeared in book 5, if she's dead I won't turn a hair. But Poor Justice Strauss... And I think it was Ernest with the code on 67 since he also said educational guests were less important than guests from a lumber mill and a volunteer wouldn't say that.

People go to ridiculous lengths for fashion, Zach. Handler portrays it in Esmé well.
I have to say that I liked chapters one through seven better than chapters eight through twelve.

I know he portrays her and fashion mania well, but I don't have to like the character itself good portrayal or not.

I was doing some theorizing last night and realized something that startled me. I probably put too much emphasis on the letter from Lemony to Kit in TSS, but as I was re-reading the passage, I came to the part where he said he was going to meet Kit at Hotel Denouement on Beatrice's birthday, which I assumed was the Thursday of the big VFD meeting. And yet, this important date is not mentioned in TPP. More timeline conundrums!
If Lemony was following immediately in the path of the Bauds, was Lemony talking about a completely different meeting? (But how can that be, unless he met Kit at HD before the Bauds went there, and between TSS and TPP?)
If Lemony is following the Bauds some years later, had the HD been rebuilt? (How can that be? He never even hinted at anything of the sort in TPP.)
Surely if the Bauds arrived at HD on or near Beatrice's birthday, it would be prominent in Lemony's mind and worthy of a lament or two within the pages of TPP.
Did DH just forget what he wrote before?

I don't think that her B-DAY would have been anytime soon though. And you're right, if it were close to her B-DAY then he would surely have mentioned it...I am sooooooooo glad the little cakesniffer is out of the picture..."HA!" to quote Olaf

I was thinking, is it possible that the cab driver is the one from TRR (the one who drops of Count Olaf, and who does not get a tip because he was showing pictures of his children)? Or perhaps all three taxi drivers (TRR, TWW, and TPP) are the same, or at least working together... perhaps a Volunteer taxi service?
Also, did anyone else notice what seems to be an eye at the top of the feather in the hat of the woman on the cover?
