I don't get it either.
It should be somewhere familiar; It IS the end of the series, after all...

I hated the Baudelaire Orphans revisiting Briny Beach. It felt like the whole series was going to start again, but that was the general idea.

Having them visit Briny Beach at the end of Book 13 would make the series nicely circular, but since they've also been there in the third-to-last book, the cycle is a little uneven.

thats all very well and good but id at least like the mystery of v.f.d. sorted out. I mean...come on... its been, like 7 books later and it still hasnt been explained Actually, we know a lot, lot more about VFD than we did 7 books ago. 7 books ago, we only knew the term "VFD" ... now we know, what it stands for, who is a member, the schism, the safe places and a LOT more.

I think he meant the whole thing hasn't been explained i.e. the reasons behind the schism etc. but yes, we're not going to know everything about them, that's deliberate, and complaining about it isn't going to change anything at all.

I would really like the whole v.f.d thing cleared up but it's the most likely to remain shrouded in mystery, that and Beatrice. I think it's possible that book the thirteenth could be either somewhere new or somewhere old. Though if you look at it like an essay, you never introduce anything 'new' in the conclusion. By new I mean location, so maybe this will be the same... <scratches her head in puzzlement>

things that confuse me are and im sorry if this has already been mentioned
Where widdershins went and what was up the tunnel the baudelaires decided not to follow in TGG
does anyone reckon the unexplained Question Mark Submarine that was chasing Count Olaf in TGG will return in book the 13th?

Book 13 would be nice if it was put by Briny Beach, I agree.

If we knew all the answers, what would we talk about?

Nothing.
And, on a different note, I'd just like to say: THEY AREN'T GOING TO MEET THE PIRATES, People. Let it go. The pirates were in the 14th century (I believe it was implied somewhere), and if I'm correct about the story taking place in the 1900's, like I believe, then the pirates will obviously not appear. It's a compleatly rediculous theory to think that the Bauds and Olaf will meet pirates when this series PROBABLY takes place in a later time.

Snicket said that the Devil's Tongue knot was invented by the FFP in the 15th century, but in the RE notes(the note to page 116) he mentions contacting current members of the FFP, and the possibility that Violet met them. While the series takes places long after the 15th century, it seems the pirates are still around.

Widdershins himself states in TGG that the Queequeg had been attacked by pirates. Since Kit helped build the submarine, then it's clearly not even a particularly old submarine - not more than thirty years, I should think.

That Pirate's thing is so boring! The story should focus on VFD!
