They may have been realtors for the good side of V.F.D. as we know they had to change the location of their headquarters regularly. During the schism, the realtors may have switched sides.
Of course, I think it's really just in there for comedic effect.

maybe LS put that Josephine was afraid of realtors for comedic effect, but when he wrote TPP he decided to put 'treacherous realtors' in there to see if anyone could find it.

That seems to have been a not insignificant part of Handler's approach to the final books - he said once that he likes bringing back minor characters, which explains the return of Bruce, Carmelita, and Phil, Bruce in particular, and of course nearly everyone returns for TPP. There's lots to look out for in the last few books that relates to previous anecdotes, sayings, characters who only appeared briefly or were just mentioned, etc.
I expect a treacherous realtor burns down houses rather than selling them.

Or maybe he just put them in there to trip people up and make them do a double-take.

or they sell the house to get money and then burn it.

. . .did anyone catch the thing in the third book? Aunt Josephine was saying something like, "There are plenty of perfectly normal people with one eyebrow. My sister-in-law had only one eyebrow, and only one ear too." Then Ishmael said almost the exact same thing in TE. So, maybe, Ishmael knew Aunt Josephine. . .?

It was Josephine's mother-in-law, and the girl was a student in Ishmael's chemistry class. If they're the same person, Ishmael must be very old... but it's not impossible. Other characters have age issues, too.

wow, good eye ford! And if it is the same person, then Ishmael is about 80 or older, because Joeshephine was 40,her mother-in-law had to be at least 20 years older than her,and Ishmael had to be at least 20 years older than her (he said little girl,so she was probaly around 8)

It's an interesting theory, and it makes sense, doesn't it? I always thought that Ishmael would've been really old... I think I got a bit confused with Harry Potter, thinking that all the characters could live longer than other people. But judging by the large discussion at the end of The End (When Olaf tells a story and the islanders interject), it probably is.
