No, it was also to the Baudelaire's mother. The thing about boats "passing" is a pun. As in "passing away."

I liked the book overall but I was upset about some of the loose ends and whatnot. I gloated over Beatrice being Mrs. Baudelaire and I too enjoyed how Olaf's death was done. Impaled upon his own sword plus he did something good for a change. This is going to be stupid but: Did Olaf die from the mycelium or harpoon wound? Did the harpoon continue through the helmet into Olaf? Or did both kill him at the same time?

I'd say he was dying from both until he ate the apple. That diluted the mycelium and gave him the extra time to help Kit. I'd say the primary cause of death was the harpoon. It probably didn't pass through the helmet, but at least of shock of the helmet being hit was transmitted to him.

Hi - I'm a new poster.
A lot of people have been saying they were and are still confused/upset/dissapointed with the ending of the series. I think this is BRILLIANT. Look at it this way - for the entire series Lemony Snicket has been saying that this is a horrible series, it won't end well, and the readers will be upset by it. He's been WARNING everyone since the first page of the series that it whole experience will be awful, and that the story of the baudelaires doesn't end well.
I love it.

But the harpoon did pass all the way through the helmet and injured Olaf because it says: "He took another bite, and another, and then, with a horrible groan, the villain rose to his feet, and the children saw that his chest was soaked with blood." pg 315The harpoon wound was what eventually killed him even after he ate the apple to dilute the Mycelium.

VFD = Volunteer Fire Department Sugar Bowl = Horseraddish apples Beatrice = Baud's mom and Lemony's Niece and a boat LS & BB = Loved eachother, got engadged and LS 'died' and BB married B. EDIT 2: I'm fairly confident that there will be another series. EDIT 3: I loved the whole quigly or duncan thing sunny said. and is it possible that CF takes place up to 3 years after TE?

There was a quote about the young Baetrice being almost one, so it's pretty certain that it's a year after TE. (Pg 2)'...the baby laughed again. she was nearly a year old, and looked very much like her mother.'

I wondering if it is a possibility that Violet is Lemony's daughter. Yes, they were going to name Violet Lemony if she was a boy and everyone thought he was dead because of The Daily Punctilio.
...and their mum is Beatrice, I'm losing points here.

No, I think there is still that possibility. People thought he was dead when Violet was about to be born. But he could have been known to be alive when she was conceived.

And since he lived on the brae, its certainly a possibility that Beatrice could have been with him. It would make the series a bit more interesting.

About the "?". Yes, but "man" and "woman" can have SUCH interests that scared even Olaf. Maybe, when he meet with them, they revealed it... And what do you think it is?

I'm not thinking Lemony is Violet's father. I just don't think that'd happen. Surely we'd have had some indication. And I don't think the ? is the sinister duo. Olaf met up with them 3 separate times, why would he run away from the ? if it was just them?
