I finished it about thirty minutes ago and loved it. It didn't answer a lot of questions but somehow it still left me with a sense of complete-ness. I loved Chapter Fourteen but it really suprised me that Sunny was talking so well, until I realized she'd gotten older. And about the whole Violet would be called Lemony if she was a boy, well, my opinion on it is that there was another person named Lemony or Mrs. Baudelaire wanted to break the mold and name it that. Though my initial thought on that was: You refused to marry a guy and now you're planning on naming your kid that! Anyway, I thought the book was very good.

I'm avoiding spoilers in this thread but I just finished chapter 2 and I have to ask is Olaf being written as a omplete wacko on purpose? He's insane!

I finished it at exactly midnight on Friday the thirteenth. Exactly midnight.
Maybe the reason Beatrice didn't marry Lemony was because she thought he was dead. EDIT: Oh wait she gave the ring back to him so I guess he was still alive.
Anyway I absolutely adored it. The ending could not have been more perfect. I shed a tear.

Ohmygosh. My reaction is- it's finished, most of my questions answered. I am shaking so hard it's not even funny. PROS- and things I'm glad were answered. Found out what the foremost V.F.D. means- Volunteer Fire Department. Olaf died- after kissing Kit Snicket. And he says I haven't apologized- does that mean that he hasn't said sorry for knocking her up? (that's one of my theories) Kit died and the Bauds raised her Baby. Awesome. I like to believe (as soon as this post is done I'm going STRAIGHT to FF for a fanfic) that Fernald and Fiona and Widdershins died hugging, the beast eating them. The Quags and Phil got away, and Hector mysteriously vanished. I like that Beatrice is the Baud's mom. I really didn't know what my opinion on that was prior to The End. CONS- and my unanswered questions Ishmael. He lives. The biggest con. WHAT HAPPENED TO ERNEST AND FRANK AND Sir and Charles (are they gay or not?) and Esme and Carmelita and Nero and Mr. Remora and Mrs. Bass? ?? Arggghhh I need to know. I'm gonna do a fanfic on that to and make it what I believe.... *snarl* What is the whole sugar bowl thing? My most dissapoinment is that he didn't clear it up. Why does Esme want it, or why is it important for an antidote? Hmm.... Oh, and who burned down the Baud's mansion? If Olaf didn't then who did? MISC. QUESTIONS Is Mr. Poe one of Olaf's henchmen? He mentions, "The adoption papers were hidden in the hat of a banker who had been promoted to Vice President in Charge of Orphan Affairs." (also, see a note in BB:RE) "Mr. Poe?" asked Sadie. " Yes," Olaf said with a scowl. "although at the time he was better known under his stage name..." Hmm, that's a eyebrow raiser. I think it definately hints to Poe being in league with Olaf. Please help me on all of these. All in all, Book 13: 9 1/4 : 10. Book 14 (Chapter 14) 10 : 10 Satisfied, even though a little loose ends, but it's complete.

I just finished THE END. Well... it's over. The Baudelaires' story is over. I thought the ending was just wonderful. Bittersweet and a little mysterious.
Did any of your copies have the Ex Libris picture of Olaf disguised as Kit? Mine didn't- it just had TBB Olaf.

I had just one question that seemed like an inconsistency. Wasn't the FFP supposed to appear in this book? According to TBBRE, Lemony said they would, yet they never do. Lemony does make use of his 'things could be stored under Poe's hat thing' but not FFP. Reasons?
Sunny was wonderous. Go Sun.
Olaf and Kit were well worth it. I'm so happy with that. Perhaps Olaf was the one true love Kit lost, not Dewey.
I loved Sunny's 'Quigley?' or 'Duncan?' question when Kit said one called out to Violet. She so was pleasing the fan-fiction buffs there.
Ishmael should have died. That was so lame.
Book the Fourteenth was great, and with the picture of the Great Unknown it gave me the inkling that maybe, just maybe, there will be something new next year.
Who burned down the Baudelaire's house? Esme? As revenge?

Wow, what an awesome book. It was a lot less about V.F.D. and a lot more about sort of concluding the series with a defining note, which I think was a very good thing. I love how some things are cleared up and some mysteries remained unsolved - it really ties together the whole theme of the book, which I interpreted as the message that you can't unpeel all of the onions of mystery in the world.
I think Lemony will create a spinoff series, possibly about the Baudelaire parents' exploits (or possibly just Beatrice's) as V.F.D. recruits all the way up to their deaths, or possibly a series about the Quaqmires.
Then again, if this was really The End for the world of the Baudelaires and V.F.D., I qould be fine with that, too.

Well, he gets swallowed up by the ? beast. We don't know if it eats him or saves him, though. Also, as for the Poe thing...I think it refers to the Co-Star that Beatrice 1 mentions in TBL. I mean, it says in TBB that Poe was an old friend of the family, right? Right? Perhaps he used to be VFD and retired, or something. OOOH I just read the TBB:RE Notes again. It's actually: "...so I can determine if there is any truth to the rumour that Violet Baudelaire came into contact with them (the FFP) on her way to Briny Beach for the third time. Interested parties might turn to Book the Thirteenth, assuming I live to write such a book." So she was only on her WAY to Briny Beach. That coupled with the fact that Beatrice sank, could mean that Violet was seperated from her siblings and daughter, and was trying to swim to safety, only to get picked up by the FFP. Nothing else makes sense, as Violet doesn't make any other journeys to Briny Beach in Book Thirteen.

if you look closely at the last picture can you see a '?' in the water? because that's what I've heard, so that can be a clue to a series about the quags

Wow, I LOVED the book. I liked how it left so many loose ends, because the whole point was that the Baud's were leaving it all behind and starting over.
The only thing that I find odd is the connection to TBL. Are we going to get more books in the series about BB trying to find her "parents?"

You know, I actually enjoyed how Handler finished it, because we have all come to know that at the end of his recent books (TSS, TGG, and TPP) that there is a sort of openended storyline/mystery.
The Kit/Olaf thing still has me wondering, but certainly I guess it would solve why Lemony is untoward with his descriptions of Olaf.
I was re-reading the book again last night and I came across this quote, which when I read the first time, I didn't take much notice of. But after I read it, I loosely re-read the book and I laughed:
"I still say you're primitive," Olaf insisted, "and I don't listen to primitive people."
"I won't force you," Friday said.
OWNED.

I guess I'll put this here: Shocking Secret #3: Lemony Snicket’s niece is an orphan. Shocking Secret #5: Lemony Snicket grew up with a terrible villain Shocking Secret #9: Lemony Snicket helped Beatrice commit a serious crime before her death.
#3: well now we know for sure it was Kit's baby #5: could Kit have been dating Olaf when Lemony was a child? could olaf be just one of the kids in the neighborhood #9: hmmm, killing olaf's parents.

I was kind of dissapointed.
I liked most of it, but I didn't like how they left of the FFP and the sugar bowl played such a small part in the story. I also didn't like how they spent the entire book on the island. And wtf what was with not getting to the quagmires?

I guess I liked the book, but the many loose ends and the way the book dragged just about killed me. All the new characters got really annoying. Things started getting pretty good at chapter twelve. I'm glad the Quagmires got a mention, I suppose that's good enough.
