I doubt it would be just horseradish ... although it is interesting that horseradish is never actually used against it --- just bitter apples and wasibi.

But, as was already said, horseradish is not so rare and hard to find to hide it in sugar bowl and fight for it as maniac!

I just read The End again, and I noticed that Ishmael doesn't say that the antidote is for the Medusoid Mycellium, he just says that it is the antidote for the poison in the tea that the one eyebrowed/eared girl had to drink, so, could it be that the antidote is for a different poison?

In my fanfiction 'The Continuation' I managed to make it both a horseradish-like antidote and also something worth fighting for,

Hmm. Well maybe that's Lemony's point about the follies of mankind. They fight and murder each other for years over something that's most certainly not worth fighting over in the first place.

The sugar bowl--a mystery that we'll probably never solve. But what if the taxi driver doesn't have the sugar bowl. What if *spoilers*
It's on the island in TE? As Ishmael said, "Eventually everything washes up on our shores." Or maybe the Great Unknown snapped it up.

Spoiler:
The sugar bowl is in the pond at the Hotel Denouement, as it is stated mutliple times. Another back up is that Klaus says that Dewey Denouement died with the secret of the location of the sugar bowl with him, and he also died with the secret of the passageway to his underwater "catalog". Then again, Lemony Snicket said he never found it when he was searching there, and it was clear that someone had already took it before him. So yeah, the location is sort of unknown, isn't it?

in The End while Klaus was reading the Series of Unfornate Events underneath the bitter apple tree he was reading an entry by his father that said "Incase of a mutiny Beatrice has put some of it in a ves..." and then Klaus coughs....in the Penultimate Peril it said that volunteers sometimes refer to the sugar bowl as the Vessel for Dissacharides. so there is probaby some kind of antidote..whether it be horseradish or applesauce in the sugar bowl
and the taxi driver couldn't have been Lemony because he said that he did not know who the taxi driver was in the penultimate peril

and the taxi driver couldn't have been Lemony because he said that he did not know who the taxi driver was in the penultimate peril TPP 251: I do know who the man was, and I do know where he went...Another back up is that Klaus says that Dewey Denouement died with the secret of the location of the sugar bowl with him, and he also died with the secret of the passageway to his underwater "catalog". Then again, Lemony Snicket said he never found it when he was searching there, and it was clear that someone had already took it before him. So yeah, the location is sort of unknown, isn't it? Klaus had no special knowledge about where the sugar bowl was or who knew about it when he said this, so I take his statement as intended to mislead Olaf. Lemony has detailed knowledge of the contents of the underwater catalog (the 27 cakes, for example), so I think he knows how to get into it. It still seems entirely possible to me that Lemony was the taxi driver and that the sugar bowl was the damp object the driver took away with him.

Hmm... Yes, that is very possible indeed.

Actually, it makes perfect sense for it to be an antidote to the MM. Think about it. One of the main themes in ASoUE is that all the safe places are going up in smoke, and eventually evil will be running rampart. If this is true (replace "evil" with "MM", and "safe places" with "antidotes"), then the sugar bowl would be very valuable indeed.

i think that the sugar bowl was part of the great unknown that was intended to mean what we wanted it to mean. It could hold the Quagmire sapphires or the Baudelaire fortune.

An earlier post said something about the significance of VFD calling the sugar bowl "vessell for dissacharide" Some Googling uncovers that dissacharide is a form of malt sugar - hence Lemony was just looking for another word for sugar
We know that it was important to find the sugar bowl, because Widdershins sent the 4 kids up the grotto to look for it.
Perhaps he did this as a way to distract the Baudelaires, because he was evil just like Poe.
We are just waiting for this:
Klaus (to Olaf): You killed my father!! Olaf: I am your father....
What I forgot to mention is... somebody also previously said in this thread "horseradish hasn't been used before, just wasabi and bitter apples" (can't be bothered finding that and doing a 'quote')
I need to add here that, actually, horseradish has been used, twice, because horeseradish is used to make wasabi, and horseradish was cross-bred with the apple tree.
I'm off now to make a Very Friendly Drink of bitter tea.

I don't think that the sugar bowl contains horseradish. I believe that whatever is inside of it was supposed to remain a mystery. I just don't think horseradish helped create the schism...I mean, if V.F.D. wants horseradish so badly, go to that factory on Lousy Lane! *grins* But I don't know what's in there so I guess any theory is just as good as the next for me.
