If this story was an element on the periodic table, it'd be gold.

If this story was an element on the periodic table, it'd be gold. Are you sure it wouldn't be one of the noble (enough) gases?

Chapter 5
“It’s a person,” Mijahu said. “They’re not getting lost or being attacked by wild animals. A person is taking them.” Charlotte was getting impatient. “What are you talking about?” she snapped. “I made a stretcher for Shelly, and now someone has taken her.” “You were supposed to be looking out for her,” BSam said. “We left you here so something like this wouldn’t happen,” Trikip added. “I… I fell asleep. I d-didn’t mean any harm,” Mijahu stuttered. “Well it’s too late for that,” Tragedy said. “Someone else is here in UE, and they’re picking us off one-by-one. Who knows what they’ve done to the others? We need to co-operate now more than ever before something even worse happens. Charlotte, what’s the food situation?” Charlotte’s eyes darted. “Um… I think we’ve got a problem,” she said slowly. “We’ve used up all the food we salvaged from the ruins.” Everybody murmured while Charlotte gulped. She glanced over to a small mound of dirt near the edge of the forest. It didn’t look like anyone had noticed it. That was a relief. “There’s no need to panic,” BSam said. “I noticed that some of the trees have fruit hanging from their branches.” “I saw them too,” Trikip agreed. “They didn’t look too fresh but what choice have we got?” Charlotte began to fidget as her stomach grumbled. “Okay then,” she said. “We’ll get some water from the lake and then head out to the forest for fruit.”
As the others gathered their flasks, Charlotte called out to Tragedy. “Tragedy, honey?” she said, batting her eyelashes. He ran to her side. “Would you be a dear and fill up my flask?” “Yes, yes, of course,” Tragedy said, grinning stupidly. “I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.” Charlotte watched as he ran off towards the lake. Once he was out of sight, she scampered over to the edge of the forest. Making sure there was nobody around, she began to scrape away at the mound of dirt. After a minute of digging, she got to her stash. Hidden in the ground was a stockpile of beans, fresh fruits and chocolate. She grabbed a bar of chocolate and quickly covered up the hole. Ripping open the wrapper, she swallowed the bar in two bites. “Charlotte?” She heard Tragedy calling out for her and walked back to the camp. “What were you doing?” he asked. “Oh you know… Just looking around…” she said, wiping her mouth on the back of her sleeve. “Thanks for the water.” She took the flask from him, brushing his hand as she did so. “My pleasure,” Tragedy said, moving closer. “Any time you want me, you just call.” He winked and turned away. Charlotte felt her stomach turn and tried to keep the chocolate down.
The sinners had walked into the forest, their stomachs grumbling. “Okay these are the trees,” Trikip said, pointing. “Yeah,” BSam agreed. “Those are the fruits we were talking about.” The fruits they were talking about resembled rotten peaches. They had a fur growing on them and they were dark-brown in colour. “Well let’s get to it then,” Mijahu said, taking out a basket and picking up a stick. BSam and Trikip worked harder than the others, each competing to get more fruits than the other. Tragedy winked at Charlotte as they worked, to her disgust. She rolled her eyes and poked at another fruit. It fell into her basket with a squelch. She picked it up and sniffed it warily. It had no particular scent but it was soft to the touch. She took a bite and immediately regretted it, spitting it out onto the ground. It left a foul taste in her mouth, and her palate was especially tolerant when it came to food. Hearing this, the others turned to face her. “Oh no,” BSam said, his face turning pale. “Charlotte spat out the fruit,” Trikip said, sadly. With a sigh they emptied their baskets, their hopes crushed.
That night, back at the camp, the sinners were starving. Even Mijahu was finding it hard to get comfortable without any food. “My stomach is so sore,” BSam groaned. “I can’t even poop,” Trikip whined. “All I want is a little sugar,” Tragedy said, for the first time not intending it as an innuendo. Charlotte looked at them. One day had passed without eating but she could already see that it had taken its toll on the others. Normally it wouldn’t have affected them but this experience was taking a lot out of them. And all they needed was a little bite to eat. Guiltily, she glanced over to her stash. It had to be done. She had no other choice. “Maybe we should sleep on it,” she said. “If we’re still this hungry in the morning we can search the other side of the lake. Don’t give up hope yet.” The sinners nodded, unable to argue, and quietly went to sleep. Once she was sure they were unconscious, Charlotte dug up the food she had been hiding. It took her more than one trip, but eventually she had carried it all back to camp. She tiptoed around the camp, placing one piece of fruit beside the sleeping sinners heads, bringing the rest of it inside.
She stepped back outside, surveying the camp. All the others were sleeping soundly. Hopefully, when they woke up the first thing they would see would be the food. The best part of all was that she didn’t even feel hungry. She felt a completely new sensation, a satisfaction that she had only ever associated with eating. She smiled, happy with herself. This didn’t last long, however. Behind her, inside one of the burned houses she heard footsteps. “Hello, Charlotte,” a voice said softly. Nervously, she turned around. “Oh,” she whispered, caught off-guard. “It’s you.”

Chapter 6
The sinners decided to leave the camp when they woke up to find Charlotte missing. “Whoever is doing this to us, taking us away, they know where we are,” Mijahu said. “This is the fourth time this person has taken someone from around here. We should have left earlier.” “You’re right,” Tragedy said glumly. “UE is a big place. We need to hide. I can’t imagine what has already happened to the others.” BSam and Trikip nodded. Without hesitation, they began to gather supplies. As he was collecting blankets, BSam looked over at his rival who was busily picking up containers. Not wanting to be beaten by Trikip he worked harder and harder. Trikip noticed this and was similarly motivated. In no time at all, everything was packed and ready to go. “Wow. Great work, guys.” “Thanks,” they said simultaneously. “I got the most, of course.” “No you didn’t. I clearly worked harder.” “There’s no need to be jealous.” “Jealous? Please. Don’t be so pathetic.” “Pathetic? Please. The only thing pathetic around here is that pile of stuff you gathered.” “Stop arguing!” Mijahu shouted as he stood between them. “The last thing we need right now is this kind of attitude.” “Let’s get moving,” Tragedy said.
The sinners walked north-east until sunset. Before setting up camp they took some sharpened sticks and stabbed them into the ground, forming a circle. “It’s not much,” Tragedy said, “but hopefully anybody that tries to get close will step on the sticks and yell out.” They ate sparingly and slept restlessly, mostly because BSam and Trikip took all the food and blankets. Nobody was kidnapped that night.
The hike continued the following morning. Mijahu was finding it hard to keep going but he knew the price he’d pay if he fell behind. Well, he didn’t truly know the price he’d pay but that only made him more terrified. They approached a wide, flowing river at midday. It was too far to jump and none of the sinners could swim. “What do we do now?” Mijahu asked. “Don’t panic,” BSam said. “I have a plan,” Trikip said. BSam took out an axe from his backpack. Trikip pulled out a saw. They glared at each other and rushed off towards a group of tall trees. Both of them started hacking away at the trees, fighting over who would cut down more. Eventually they grew tired and collapsed onto the ground. Trikip looked at the wood he had chopped and knew that - even tied together - it wouldn’t hold their weight. BSam knew what he was thinking and realised the same was true for the wood he had chopped. The rivals looked at each other and knew what had to be done. Without a word, they brought the timber back to the others and tied both bundles together. Neither sinner wanted to admit it, but they had to work with each other if they wanted to survive. Differences were put aside, rivalries forgotten. Once all the wood was tied together they placed it across the river. Mijahu and Tragedy shuffled to the other side. Trikip was next to cross. He was halfway there when his foot slipped from underneath him. He slid into the water, clutching onto the bridge with one shaky hand. “Trikip!” BSam shouted as he ran forward. He jumped onto the bridge and shimmied quickly over. Grabbing Trikip by the hand, he pulled him to safety. Trikip gasped for air and shivered. He looked at BSam carefully. “Th-th-thank you, B-B-Sam,” he said through chattering teeth. They got to the other bank and sat down, needing a rest.
“I’m sorry,” Trikip said an hour later as they were walking again. Tragedy and Mijahu were up ahead. “I’m sorry for being so greedy.” BSam looked at him. “You don’t have to apologise,” he said. “I’ve been just as greedy as you have. I suppose neither of us stopped to look at the bigger picture, did we?” “Right,” Trikip smiled. “On our own we’re amazing but together… we’d be unstoppable.” Their laughs were cut short as hands covered their mouths. BSam looked at the person holding Trikip and Trikip looked at the person holding BSam. In their horror they glanced at each other, more confused than ever.

Yes, it's amazingly confusing. What have BSam and Trikip just seen? I can't wait to find out.
