It's been a week since I started this thread, but it's also been a couple of days since any new ideas have been coming in. I apologise for not getting around to this sooner - my focus was stolen by the Member of the Year contest for a while (by the by, do recall that the rules require you to PM me your votes as well, as not everyone's done so) - but I think it's time to round up the ideas and decide what we're going with. I won't post a formal poll for this, but I would like to see a groundswell of opinion within the following week (preferably sooner). Our proposals are: - Collaborative story. Pros: If done as an exquisite corpse with no word requirement and low barrier to entry, could be easy for anyone to contribute to. Cons: Arranging for contributors to participate in linear order to a definite and unalterable deadline.
- Snicktionary: Forty-four unique semi-obscure words with creative definitions and the odd illustration. Pros: Easy for anyone to contribute to. Cons: Needs a unifying theme.
- Possible titles for the next book in ATWQ. Pros: Easy for anyone to contribute to (especially as they don't need to be serious). Cons: Difficult to illustrate; might be better next year in the run-up to the final book.
- Photographs of ourselves plus the V.F.D. insignia and pledge in interesting places in our various localities. Pros: Personal touch, highlights international dimension to fandom. Cons: We'd really need forty-four, not everyone has a camera, not everyone has perfect travel access.
- Forty-four reasons not to read ATWQ. Pros: Relevant. Cons: Not everyone's read ATWQ, might possibly cross the line from ironic to insulting.
- Forty-four Snicket/Handler quotes plus attached microstory. Pros: Relevant, highlights our status as fans. Cons: Primary content prompt is recycled.
- Forty-four postcards from Stain'd-by-the-Sea. Pros: Highly flexible. Cons: Not everyone's read ATWQ, risks being too open-ended.
- Forty-four line poem with eleven illustrations. Pros: Contribution level flexible, as either lines or couplets can be contributed, and doesn't need to be entirely serious. Cons: Might be difficult to straighten out as a unified product.
- Forty-four pieces of advice. Pros: Highly flexible.
- Forty-four micro-descriptions of characters with one from every age from one to forty-four. Pros: Relevant. Cons: Potentially too much competition for popular and main characters and not enough for minor characters.
- Music video with entries and illustrations as the visuals. Pros: Allows all entries to be integrated into single highly specific product, numerous potential projects can theoretically be presented in this form if time permits. Cons: Requires musical expertise, video expertise, may require multiple forum members to have recording and editing hardware/software, putting together original music could effectively be a whole separate product in itself.
- Forty-four totally different things. Pros: Variety. Cons: Variety.
I've also put together a list of suggested themes that could be used as prompts for creating one's particular entry: - Alliteration. Pros: Easy for anyone to contribute to.
- Palindromes. Cons: Only so many palindromes in the English language.
- Death. Cons: Do you really want to send Mr. Handler a coded death threat on his birthday?
- The number forty-four, or more simply, four. Pros: Easy for anyone to contribute to.
- Birthday cake. Pros: Relevant. Cons: Non-abstract idea that might be difficult to work in depending on the project.
Wow, that's a lot of ideas! And I want one picked within the week. You may want to read back through the thread to get a feel for which ideas were popular. I'd personally recommend the ideas that were better-realised and more descriptive, but at the same time, practicality trumps all.

I don't think there was talk about a music video, Dante, which would require a lot more planning and whatnot (or video expertise, as you put it) - just a collaborative song with collaborative lyrics plus a cover design. I'm just pointing it out so as people don't think it's too big of a task. A song is what I vote for.
And for general consensus or whatever else it's worth, here's my runner up candidate ideas I like as well: 2. 44 postcards from Stain'd 3. Snicktionary

i was thinking that people that want to could do a song no matter what like if the snicktionary wins, a corresponding song could be made using some of the words or something. idk if the musicy people get together they can figure something out or a bunch of people can make their own songs and we can choose one to go along with the final project. it can be like the art, its just something that accompanies the main project.
also for the characters, i was thinking we could use some multiple times but just set a limit.
i like every idea i came up with and the snicktionary idea.

I don't think 44 reasons not to read ATWQ would be insulting, as lots of DH's promotional material is centered around the idea of advising people not to read his work.
And I didn't mean a music video. All I meant is, say we do the Snickitionary and we write our definitions on banners. We could put these banners together in a video with the music playing on the background.

I prefer the idea of writing forty-four postcards. We can be sarcastic.

I'm not really with the snicktionary idea. its a great idea, yes, but i want to do something more ATWQ-relevant whilst ATWQ is being published.

I believe I noted that, time permitting - that is, if we have loads of time left after finishing the core project - then a musical aspect could well be added, either just as an accompanying song or with all of the project material arranged in a video (wouldn't have to be anything fancy) and the music playing over the top of it. The music aspect is pretty flexible, so if anyone really wants to do that, I'd have no problem with it being planned as additional material while the core project is being worked on, although I'd probably request that somebody else oversee it.
As far as the core project goes, we basically have two frontrunners, so I think I'll just give it another day or two to make sure everyone's happy and straighten out the kinks. For instance, I take Mister M's point about ATWQ relevance but I don't think it would be hard for those who are enjoying ATWQ to orient their submissions, whatever they may be, in an ATWQ-ish direction. So for the Snicktionary, those as wish could use words relevant to ATWQ, or they could give a definition that parallels or references ATWQ in some way. And those as don't wish can use a word they like or are confused by or that they can use to tell a joke.
Also, for the postcards, while the number of "fronts" would vary according to how many illustrations (or even photographs) we get, I imagine that we could start off by making a template for the back and having people write on it in whatever ways they have available - so they could print it off, physically write on it, and then photograph or scan it, or they could handwrite or type on it in a computer program, or post their text on here and ask someone else to transfer it to a postcard. And the messages themselves could run the gamut from birthday wishes to cryptic microstories to letters that don't have much to do with ATWQ but which we can say have been sent to the wrong address.

who even are you?
i'd really rather do the snicktionary thing over the postcards. its a good idea but im lazy as hell and probably wont actually participate with the postcards. and before you decide thats a good thing, im funny okay guys. you use my stuff every year i participate even if you use the wrong stuff. besides if i get really inspired i might make 18 double posts in this section or even 20. new record!
