AnnaKarenina, it was pretty obvious that Jerome didn't receive that letter, and that the doorman took it. The hook-handed man could have been posing as the doorman for ages - he isn't seen in TWW, TMM, or TAA.
This is all clear in Jerome's letter to Jacques.
Also: The room above the penthouse was probably some kind of V.F.D. refuge in case of trouble. In TSS, Quigley said that the tunnels were built by volunteers to lead to safe places.
It's also worth mentioning that the Snicket File page 13 picture was taken in front of 667 Dark Avenue.
Edit: "said" not "saide".

It's also worth mentioning that the Snicket File page 13 picture was taken in front of 667 Dark Avenue. Why would that be worth to mention Fight Fire with Fire? Wow us with your genius. I'm sure you a have a theory.

I don't have anything specific, but:
1: Mr Baudelaire is in the picture. 2: The tunnel from Mr Baudelaire's house comes out in the building behind them. 3: They're all in V.F.D.

We don't know the obscure writer, it isn't Lemony.

Which obscure writer? ARe you talking about the man in the photograph with the notebook? Because I'm pretty sure that's Lemony. Notebook, not looking at the camera... He fits the profile.

If it was lemony, then lemony (narrarating the story) would have said, a horrible picture if he was in it or something like that. But he just says it's a strangly obscured man.

I disagree. He was focused on stating what the Baudelaires saw. After all, it was a pretty big turning point in their journey. An interruption on his part wouldn't have been fair.
I will grant you, though, that he does interrupt some other things involving him.
Paraphrase: "...looking at a piece of paper that fills me with dread, "In photographs, and in every public place Snicket rarely shows his face." "

He has interupted the story in important parts before. Besides, he wouldn't have just said obscured man. If you saw yourself covered up would you call yourself that?

It would depend on the situation.

Maybe it was a really ugly photo.
Or it could be someone else. It's possible, but I think it's Lemony.

Which reminds me - on the subject of the floor above the penthouse, you probably reached it via the second elevator - which wasn't always ersatz, in my opinion.

That's certainly a possibility, although I imagined that the hidden floor was reached by way of secret stairs from the penthouse, or a trapdoor in its ceiling. He has interupted the story in important parts before. Besides, he wouldn't have just said obscured man. If you saw yourself covered up would you call yourself that? Consider the ever-present possibility that Lemony(as in DH, the author) seeks to mislead us.

He's certainly done it before. All that evidence that Beatrice is the Baudelaire mother, and then he comes out with, "Some truth, but not total truth.".
Edit: Why me? Also, since I'm editing, allow me to plug my Theories Galore thread. There's new stuff.

That bit of evidence has been discussed someplace in Sardonic Series. No one is quite sure how Beatrice can be partially the Baudelaire mother, but there's a theory that she was the children's nanny. If DH is reading all this, he's probably laughing.

I want to be an author just so I can do that.
And, hopefully, to make some money too.
