Anybody gothic here?
They really freak me out! I do wear black skirts or shirts sometimes, but I'd never wear everything black. When I go shopping at the plaza, all you see are goths! They're everywhere! The two things that scare me the most.....spiders and gothics, freaky!

I think that it's a super bad idea to actually call one's self a goth. It will get you pidgeon holed in with the "OMG! i m lik so goth bcuz i wear hot topic clothing" crowd.
Don't fear the goths, Emah, they're probably totally unscary people when you actually talk to them.

Who is 'goth' depends on your definition. There are those who just like the style, those who have the 'attitude' (i.e. always depressed and/or angsty), and the combination of the two.
I like the style, but don't wear it that much (too expensive, although a good idea is to go to goodwill type stores and buy cheap shirts with the intention of making them goth... also, I bought a trenchcoat at a hot topic-ish store, but I haven't yet worn it because I'm afraid of ruining it by rain or snow or whatever... there's no washing instructions so I don't know what to do with it). Sometimes I have the attitude of angst, but it's more that it just seems that way to outsiders, because I really have nothing to angst about. I don't think one should be scared of them, it's not like they're all delinquents (I'm sure some are, but you shouldn't take a part as representative for a whole group). Most goths I know are actually quite friendly... one year at school I knew no one at my assigned lunch time, and I asked to sit with them, and they welcomed me into their group, despite the fact they probably saw me as a nerd (I have glasses, get good grades, read a lot, etc).
In English, we read an article that brought up the fact that Disney was having a zero tolerance policy on goths, because they were being all depressed in a place that's s'possed to be happy. These goths were not vandalizing anything, or bothering people, they were just sitting around minding their own business, but Disney had their police or whatever follow them around and that sort of thing. What do you think about that? Discuss.

It's interesting, because, at least around here, the goths are the ones who always buy discount things and whatnot, then personalize them. Not necessarily faded crappy looking things, but they don't necessarily spend a fortune to buy the stuff that is more or less "official goth" (which is basically what Hot Topic is... selling the rebellious people their own stuff). Also, I probably used the term 'depressed' very loosely... not that they necessarily have those characteristics, but seem to, to people who don't get to know them better. As for the thing about Disney, the article ("Goths in Tomorrowland," by Thomas Hine) discusses that the goths were held more to the rules than most people, and were arrested for even the tiniest thing they did wrong. I think it's unfair to do that, to just single out a group because they happen to act differently than other people there.

I find myself a bit of a goth I suppose. I don't think we're weird at all. We just dress differently, listen to different music and sometimes are a bit into the whole wicca thingy. I agree with swans, we create our own style. But yes, I'm only sayind I'm a bit of a goth because of what most people think a goth is. Most people say goths are just people who wear black all the time. No. That's wrong.
The thing that annoy me the most though, is anti-gothics. I find them incredibly annoying. We're no different to them, just dress differently, have a different style and listen to different music.
Also, I feel quite strongly about this, I get tesed about being a bit of a goth. It really upsets me. If only people would see. None of my friends are goths. Most of my friends listen to the Beatles. I don't tease them about the way they dress and their taste in music.

I don't like the gothic style. It's just my personal taste. I don't think it's very fashionable, the way they dress and present themselves.

They really freak me out! I do wear black skirts or shirts sometimes, but I'd never wear everything black. What do you determine goth as embah? I'm wearing all black right now, does that make me goth? They have Brak t-shirts Swans? I love Brak, I'm gonna have to go to Hot Topic soon.I haven't seen Space Ghost in forever. Oh, I have nothing against Hot Topic, they have some cute shirts.

Goth. Yes, I love the style and dress it when I feel the need to express that side of me. It's not all doom and gloom keep in mind. But people seem to get it confused with punk, which is annoying. People also seem to associate Good Charlotte with punk, which is also wrong. THEY ARE NOT PUNK! Buncha sellouts.......

Yes. Good Charlotte aren't punk, they're crap(from my point of view). They are not goth.
Yes. If this is what you're calling the "goth style", then I suppose I wear those clothes all of the time. I wear chains, black, reactor boots but how does that make me a goth? Most feminists are goths. I'm a feminist.
Whether I do think of myself as a goth doesn't matter, but others will. Every time I walk down the street, there's always someone staring at me.

Is it wrong of me to classify Linkin Park as goth-rock? I never keep up with these newfangled band trends of you kids today, seriously.
Also, I guess by my wardrobe I'm at least ten percent gothic--got a Jekyll and Hyde shirt in there, a few Nightmare Before Christmas shirts, and lots of dark-colored sweatpants and jeans. Plus a Luigi shirt I bought from Hot Topic when I went there shopping with my mom for Christmas (stuff for the aforementioned Sarah), and some Happy Tree Friends stuff, but I ordered those from the site, not from HT.
Of course, on the other hand I have a bright pink Japanese silk tea dress, a bunch of Iron Chef stuff and a fluffy white cravat, so I guess it's all relative, huh?

There's Iron Chef merchandise? That's awesome. Anyway, I've never been to Hot Topic (never heard it mentionned before until this site), so I can't say much about that. But really, Goths are nothing to be afraid of. The goths at my school are just people who find death, or dark things interesting. Most of them are interested in issues, are intelligent people and hang out with the "hippie" type people. And, I mean... you're on an ASOUE forum so I bet a lot of you find darkness interesting. Handler's described his books as gothic novels... Then again, there's a difference between the pop-culture goth and the romantic gothic style... I ADORE gothic-romantic literature, art, all that, but I don't dress in black and wear tons of eyeliner... But a lot of my clothes are black, and I love darkness and mystery and romanticism and all that, but I'm not what you'd call a goth... I've often thought other kids would take me more seriously if I became a definite goth... other teenagers seem to take them more seriously than us geeks.
