I'd quote so much stuff fro page 2, but there'd be too much, so excuse me if I become random and crazy.
I LOVE VICTORIAN GOTHIC ASTRICRASY or whatever you want to call it. I'm talking The Brontés, Anne Radcliffe (some wonderful person mentionned The Mysteries of Udolpho), all the elegance and dark clothing and mystery of the 19 and ealy 20th century. The kind of writing that inspired Handler (Poe, Baudelaire, et all). THAT is my gothic. The kind of stuff Edward Gorey draws, the kind of stuff you'd never wear to school because you're afraid to ruin it. Look at Luna's pictures. THOSE are my kind of gothic.
Now, modern gothic is quite a ways from that... it's more... punk-ish.
I have issues with the Gap (someone said that anything from the Gap's not worth buying). I HATE brand names, child slave labour, advertising (I recommend No Logo by Naomi Klein for anyone who's interested in this kind of stuff), and the Gap is one of the HUGE contributors to that kind of crap (along with Nike and all those huge sport brands). So I buy almost all my clothes a) second hand or from b) little known or independant stores.
So I'm one of those nostalgic 19th century living-vicariously-throuh-artwork goths... I don't identify with today's goth culture, though. That's just me...
Celinra (I think) was saying that the goths she knew were interested in issues, too. The girl I know who I automatically associate with goth was a complete geek.... she loved Star Trek, Science Fiction novels, had a 95% average... she was awesome. I have no idea where she got her clothes, but she had these great Victorian looking blouses and jackets and trenchcoats and wore a top hat and had (naturally) long black hair... she was also very involved in lots of protests and human rights club type things and was very outspoken about her views. People have to have something that they stand for if they're going to be a goth, I think, and a lot of them do. There are still those wannabe goths who buy clothes off wherever and say they're goths. But someone said they were afraid to talk to goths because they slit their wrists and listened to scary music? That's a stupid stereotype and definitely not a mandatory part of gothic culture. Most of them probably don't worship the devil, murder children, cut themselves, drink blood, all that. That's just... unreasonable to think they do (although some may... there are some weird people out there... but not in every highschool does every goth want to perform satanic rites on your pet bunny).
And Dark Phoenix, you wear black suits? If I knew guys who wore black suits I'd probably swoon and faint and all that. Well... one guy I knew did... long story... won't go into that.
Anyway, if anyone knows where to get ahold of some pretty Victorian type gothic costuming, I'll love you forever.
Whew. Watch A&E's version of Jane Eyre. It's awesome.

I don`t mean to be mean, but calling a goth "depressed or angsty" is a total sterotype. And also goth is mostly about the music than the "style" Here are some amazing bands that I guess you could call goth:
The Cure Siouxsie And The Banchees Bauhaus Joy Division Skinny Puppy Sisters Of Mercy
Things like Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth are not at all goth. They`re more metal than anything.
And yes, attitude and style are parts of being goth, but goth attitude is more looking at something other people would`nt normally care about and calling it beautiful. And style is more wearing what you want and not caring what people think of it.
Also, there is no reason to be afraid of goths. Most goths are pretty non-violent.
Sorry I made such a long post, I just happen to be into the gothic subculture and didn`t want people to judge goths by the sterotype.

I can't really think of anyone in my town who's aristocratic goth (sadly, since I really really like that style). Most people here are punk-goth, which is essentially Hot Topic shoppers, the kids who wear long black trench coats to creep people out and draw tears with eyeliner down their face as they listen to Marilyn Manson and tell off the preppies. Some of them are all right, I share some interests with them, they're cool, but the whole punk-goth outlook seems kinda juvenile to me...
