As mentioned in the Sardonic Series thread - I think Orangey's idea for all of us to re-read the series and discuss a different book each week is a brilliant means to re-ignite the fandom we've all come to love so dearly. I know for me, its been nearly three years since I read The Bad Beginning - and in light of all the time we've had to dwell on the series as a whole - I think taking the time to go back to where it all started and follow all the way through would reveal a lot more of the subtleties and secrets of Snicket's prose. So I propose that those who still hazard a glance at the threads in this section spread the word their friends on the forum - and that on February 25th we officially start the Great 667 Re-Read - starting with The Bad Beginning discussion from now till March 5th. Give it a go, because the only way to keep ASOUE alive is to keep it fresh in our minds! UPDATE: The Bad Beginning read will include the notes of the Rare Edition- available here. In response to how the discussion should be structured - feel free to use this thread to post either your ongoing thoughts as you read each chapter - or your notes on the book as a whole. One thread keeps discussion compact and easily accessible. Those wanting to join the re-read group will be added to the below list : let's try to get past 100 members! 1. Sora 2. VKSB 3. MasterMijahu253 4. katebad 5. BSAM 6. Dante 7. captainwiddershins 8. (20,1) 9. tk 10. shruti 11. Flaneur 12. hermes 13. Jemima 14. Sixteen

I'll join in but I only have TBB, TWW, and TSS, so I will only be able to contribute to those conversations.
Oh, I also have TUA, if you are going to be reading that.

Yes I think Re-Reading TUA after TCC, and TBL before The End would also be very helpful for the conversation - and draw out our discussion for a few more weeks.

Psst, the U.A. comes between THH and TCC, not after TCC. I agree with what you're going for - reading the books in context and analysing what they mean at the time of writing. But bearing that in mind, should we read the Rare Edition notes with TBB, or after TSS, when they were published? I'd say with TBB so we don't have to effectively take a step back. Also, since you have such bold ambitions, I'm taking the initiative and Announcement-ising this. Sign me up, too. It's been a while since I've read any of the books in full rather than just harvesting them for quotes.

I'm in! However I'm missing a couple of the books by now... I'll have to borrow them from the local library, but I'm still in.

Am I the only one who thinks a week is going to be an awfully short time period in which to read each of the books, especially some of the later ones? I'm in, tentatively, because I've wanted to do this for a while, but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up, what with school taking precedence and all.

This is an excellent idea, and I'm coming out of lurkdom to append my name to the list. How is this going to work, exactly? Do we each just read the book during the week, and write our thoughts as independent posts in this thread whenever we wish? Or will there be some other sort of structure or protocol for thread creation? Organization is the (okay, a) key to success.
I also think a week is too short. I'd suggest a chapter a day, although that may be slow-going for the first few books.

How about we go with a week for some of the early books, and see how well that works? If we've bags of time left over, we can keep it as a week moving on into the later books; however, if it fills the week rather snugly, we can allow another few days, up to another week, for the later books.
That said, it's worth noting that not everyone can be here every day, so I think a fairly open style might help; people can do write-ups once they finish the book if that's how they read, or if they'd rather take it more slowly, they can make more frequent posts with their observations per chapter. The later books still don't take that long to read each, but long enough that you're probably not going to read them in a single sitting, not after launch day.
(By the way, masterviolet456 is right; this wasn't originally Orangey's idea, the first post in that thread had been deleted. But nonetheless, the project is now off the ground, and it's rotating around analysis and fandom of the books, not of the person who had the idea to reread them as a group.)

I'm in.
(I agree with shruti that a book a week is a bit fast. It's true that the books - even the fatter ones - are really very short compared with the average book; but we don't just have to read them but discuss them, and we are all on different schedules; a useful discussion with which everyone can keep up should perhaps go at a slightly gentler pace.)

Even though TBB is the shortest book, if we do the RE notes with it, that could open up quite a can of worms (although as I said, we may want to do those with TSS, instead - bonus installment?). But I still vote for provisionally calling it a week, and extending it if people are delayed or the discussion gets juicy.

I don't know about anyone else, but I could read TBB in a day. That said, it's only one of four books that I have, and I think a week of reading it might be worth while.
EDIT: Oh, duh I forgot I have The End! So I will be in on that week (or whatever it turns out to be), and I will try and get some more of the books before their "week" comes up.
