I discovered something interesting. According to Wiki, Lemony Snicket was hoping Guy Maddin would direct the ASOUE film. I looked at Maddins film titles and look at what I found. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Winnipeg

That's pretty interesting; he's apparently popular for his recreating of the "look and style of silent or early sound era," of which ASOUE, to an extent, gives a certain feel.

Hah, I watched that this December. My boyfriend's family got a lot more of a kick out of it than I did, them being born-and-bred Winnipeggers, but now that I know he wanted him to direct, I can't help but think, "what a lost opportunity." Maddin's style is bizarre and melancholy, which would have been a decidedly interesting alternative to the Tim Burton-lite that the film which made it to the screen offered.

I like to think that R could possibly stand for Ramona; since it would be a book reference which is very V.F.D.

There's also the possibility that Ramona is a separate R. in the U.A. meeting transcript, though...

On the other hand, R. loving Lemony was an idea I've also had, although again, I don't think he'll ever get over Beatrice. That would be R.'s tragedy. Maybe it was a love triangle! R loved Lemony, but Lemony and Beatrice loved each other? Or maybe the duchess is gay/Lesbian. Anyway, I believe Olivia and R to be separate people. And what reason would Olivia have had to impersonate the Duchess? What side of VFD is Olivia on? Fire fighting or Fire Starting?

No side. Olivia turned away from both sides of the schism, choosing her own moral philosophy instead: "Give people what they want."

Give people what they want." In my personal belief that is one of the most stupid personal philosophies ever. "He who hesitates is Lost" is far more wise, if a little rash.

Aye, Ramona as in the works of Beverly Cleary, yes; a librarian from the Ramona books also appears in the U.A., so Ramona herself isn't too strange a possibility.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, I get it now. and is there any other reference to the old guy with the shiny shoes, the pants with shap crease, or was it just Lemony or some other V. F. D. member in disguise (because I've inly read the actual series and TUA)

The old librarian appears only in the U.A. and is almost certainly just a Ramona Quimby reference, yes; the original Ramona page which he comes from is in one of the scrapbook sections of the U.A.

oh. now back on the subject of the duthess. why is the Baudalaire family and the duthesse's family so uh, close, as in the ring. (and was it a fake in TAU or was it the real dutchess whoever they are)

It seems that the Duchess and Beatrice were friends when they were young, which is as good a reason as any for the two families to be close. I guess it's merely coincidence that everyone seemed interested in giving them the ring later - the Duchess gave the ring to Lemony, who gave it to Beatrice as a wedding ring, who gave it back, and he then gave it to Kit, who gave it to Bertrand, probably so that he could then give it to Beatrice as a wedding ring. Some of these transfers are still quite mysterious to us all, though.

so there is 3 Beatrices; the Baudalaire's mom, Lemony's love, and Kit's kid. Right?
