HarperCollins Canada is the Canadian publisher for ATWQ, so that might be a strong enough reason for LemonySnicket.com to at least direct people to the write location, i.e. ATWQ.com. It depends on a couple of factors - how well-integrated HCCanada is with the rest of HC, and what exactly the relationship is like between these publishers. It sounds as if the process that led to Handler and Susan Rich joining Little Brown may have been a little acrimonious; HarperCollins may not have anyone willing to speak up for a collaboration - or even with the right authority to do so. On the other hand, LemonySnicket.com doesn't mention the Short-Lived Edition yet, either... But personally, I'm not expecting the SLE to have any content relating to ATWQ, cool though that would be. (I would go nuts if, in five years, they did a Helquist-illustrated ATWQ and a Seth-illustrated ASoUE, though!)

According to this article, Snicket (among others) will be contributing commentary to an edition of The Haggadah, which is apparently a Jewish text related to Passover. May not be all that interesting to some, but it's something nonetheless.

Interesting! It's especially notable that it's Snicket, not Handler, who is contributing; I'm reminded of Lewis Carroll, who sometimes used that name, rather than Charles Dodgson, for serious writng on logic and philosophy, because that was the name by which he was better known.

EDIT: They're also preforming the composer is dead in Strand-Capitol preforming arts center, York by the looks of it at 10 o'clock today. see here

An ebook edition of The Bad Beginning Rare Edition is planned, with new (i.e. not in the original edition) bonus content - a multi-voice audio recording of the first chapter, and a short movie entitled "Scream and Run Away!", which I presume is the one from the Vile Videos (if so, probably lacking the coda promoting The End and TBL). It's set for June 12th. www.amazon.com/dp/B007IVBNLE/This is pretty much how I thought they'd deal with the out-of-print and more unusual books - they'd ebook 'em. I expect TBL to get the same treatment eventually.

But surely they couldn't format TUA as an e-book? That'd surely be too difficult what with all the photographs and handwritten notes. Some of the illustrations in the "look inside" thing on Amazon were horribly squashed, though I suspect that's just in the preview.

All they'd have to do would be to format all the pages as pictures; I don't think it would really be that difficult, although TBL would obviously lose a lot of its functionality. Although some of the ebook readers I have don't let you zoom in on pictures, which is precisely why ebooks are a fudge and the originals are superior, in this case. But if it's a choice between release as an ebook and completely abandonment of the text, I'd have to choose the former. I guess they'll manage with the text somehow.

Aye, putting the UA in e-book form via images wouldn't be difficult. Formatting them so that multiple e-readers can access them would be the tricky part; I've gathered that image distortion is a common complaint among e-book purchasers.

The Bad Beginning: Short-Lived Edition has a cover! Brace yourself for the raddest disappointment this side of the Rapture. ...Seriously, what is this edition? Is it just TBB, but cheap?

Aha! Looking at the cover though, there's nothing remarkable, and I can't help thinking that if there was it would be advertised on the cover.

Yes, sounds like a cheap TBB, which would explain the meaning of "short-lived." Is it hardcover, though? Usually books of that nature are in some sort of alternate form.

Because of the price, I'm inclined to think that this edition only has a cover and no text, but that's highly unlikely. I imagine that this is out just to get more people interested in ASOUE, and in turn ATWQ.

Yes, $4.99 USD is a very cheap price compared most books today, which cost about $20 maybe.

We now have a synopsis for the BBSLE: --- Dear Reader, The book you are holding in your hands is a short-lived edition of a book that will likely make your life shorter as well. The tale of three Baudelaire children, who find themselves thrown into an unhappy situation containing a treacherous villain with an evil scheme and bad manners, becomes more and more dreadful on each page, and everyone so foolhardy as to read it will find themselves weeping and moaning by the end of the book. This book is offered at an introductory price, but it introduces the reader to such unpleasantries as a disastrous fire, itchy clothing, a baby trapped in a cage, a plot to steal an enormous fortune, and dusty curtains. I made a solemn promise to write down these wretched tales, but you have no such promise, and if I were you I would put down a book this terrible, no matter how reasonably priced. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket --- It's just a cheap TBB, isn't it.

This probably is, as Keniscle said, just a promotional/marketing edition.
