Yes, most probably released to introduce a new audience to Snicket's works, and in turn encourage people to read ATWQ. I'm a little disappointed that there is no new content, but I suppose that was to be expected.

It's being published by HarperCollins, so I guess that it's not because they want to encourage people to read ATWQ. Instead, I think they're hoping that more people will become interested in ASOUE because of ATWQ.

Sales like this aren't uncommon, though granted they usually occur when the book is first released. Since that synopsis is really capitalizing upon the price, and not advertizing fresh material, I'm guessing "short-lived" does indeed refer to the amount for which it's being sold.

It's rare to see new editions specifically customised to advertise their low price, though - although this isn't the first time HC has tried this; recall that the paperbacks had as their slogan "extra stories and extra art for no extra cents." Recall also that that particular marketing strategy didn't work. I wonder if that Dear Reader synopsis will actually appear on the back? It sounds like it. Do people really want to buy an edition of a book that sloughs off the original context to make a point about its cheapness?

Most probably not.
Is there any chance that Snicket wrote the blurb himself, or was that probably HC? The only thing I liked about the back cover description, was this line:

I imagine that Snicket probably wrote the Dear Reader synopsis himself, but it's very hard to guess. His style can be imitated, but if so, it's a very good imitation.

The Chronicles of Harris Burdick has now appeared in the UK, from Andersen Press - just saw a copy of it in my local bookshop, and it looks very impressive.

Finally! I'd better get that, then. I don't know what the delay has been with some of Snicket/Handler's recent output. I guess some of this material just isn't standout enough to get considered for a simultaneous or even a remotely nearby release.

Well, of course, this isn't actually a book by Snicket or Handler. Also, I suspect that the original Mysteries of Harris Burdick is better known in America than here, creating more of a market for it.

Yeah, I know, but it seems like a suddenly very striking example when Why We Broke Up has a similar delay. This material isn't as compelling or as urgent as a high-selling series entry is going to be, but it's still a while to have to wait.

An AuthorTracker has come along to remind me that the Short-Lived Edition is out today. Get it while it exists! If you don't already own TBB, that is.

Just got this email aswell. Wondered what it was but I guess it's nothing special. Does it just cut some bits out or something? :/

As far as anyone knows, it's just TBB at a cheaper price and with a sticker on the cover - possibly an edited Dear Reader letter. I've ordered a copy, but I don't expect to get it for some time.

The sale appears to be offered through several different mediums, including audiobook, so if there were new content I doubt it would be translated.

Why are Harper Collins offering signed copies of a book not published by them? (if this is indeed legit, which I doubt).
