I dug up some more news: A playwright by the name of Joe Tracz said the following in a recent interview: "And in the world outside musical theatre, I just finished writing for the first season of a Netflix show, an adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, aka one of my favorite book series of all time." So, there are multiple writers for the show (with Handler perhaps being the head or lead writer), and they are probably anticipating multiple seasons.

Joe sounds awesome, based on his observations regaurding Moby Dick, Burton, and Miyazaki.
Unrelated, a few hopes: 1. Gothic arches music 2. Daniel Handler cameo

Just found out that NPH posted a photo of himself in some sort of prosthetic molasses make up on instagram with an interesting caption: https://www.instagram.com/p/BBtps2vyToq So if that really is for ASoUE, he might be getting a full face mask.

OMG yes yes yes yes they're already making a negative mold of his head with alginate he's totally getting prosthetics I give you my SFX-makeup-artist-wannabe word this means they're shooting soon since prosthetics made with foam latex in TV/movies usually are used right away.

Could that be the look for a disguise?

He's probably going to get nose, chin and cheekbones prosthetics.
In case someone is interested in the process of making prosthetics: using that alginate cast of the picture covered with plaster bandages they're going to make the positive mold with fiberglass or plaster. Then they use that mold of Neil's head to sculpt the prosthetic pieces with clay or other kind of putty. Then they make a new negative mold with plaster to make the final pieces with foam latex or silicone. If they're going to use foam latex, then they need to make a different piece for every day of shooting, and use them asap. Since they have enough money maybe they're going to make them with silicone, buuut I have my doubts since the pieces would be too heavy (at least the nose). My bet is foam latex, and if they're already working on the SFX makeup, then I guess they're starting to film before April, probably the next few weeks.

He's probably going to get nose, chin and cheekbones prosthetics. Seems about right, I think that's more or less what they did with Carrey. I'm guessing some of his other persona's will get prosthetic's too. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a full face mask for disguises like Shirley (I can't help but envision a Mrs. Doubtfire type look for that).

Hmmm I don't know, thinking about how clumsy is Olaf when it comes to disguises I think (hope) they're going to stick with simple, ridiculous looking makeup for Shirley (the most complex persona I think), especially because the funny thing of it is that everybody should be able to recognize him. I can't imagine Olaf having the time or skills to make full face prosthetics for his costumes haha.

Thanks for the info, Zort. And I just wanna point out that the picture was posted a month ago, so the start of shooting really is around the corner!

I don't think Olaf makes any of his costumes himself, I believe they're all a part of the VFD disguise kit or something like that. Anyway, the mask could look silly and unrealistic and that could be the joke. I expect they'll probably just throw a wig on him, I just couldn't resist the idea of Olaf doing a Mrs. Doubtfire rip-off.

I would have to agree that it's rather the point of Olaf's disguises that even children can see straight through them with no effort at all. It would be a mistake to make them too good - a mistake which, noticeably, the movie made, in having Stephano be completely unrecognisable as Olaf/Carrey. You have to be able to tell it's still him.

It would be a mistake to make them too good - a mistake which, noticeably, the movie made, in having Stephano be completely unrecognisable as Olaf/Carrey. You have to be able to tell it's still him. I thought Stephano was a pretty poor disguise in the movie. It was a black wig and mustache with a pair of glasses. It was sort of funny bad to me and I kind of like that approach. But I think to some degree these costumes should be convincing from time to time. In the books I felt like sometimes Olaf was trying really hard to fool people and other times he was just phoning it in. So I think the effort of each disguise should vary case by case. I don't think it's supposed to be that these costumes are so bad that even children could see through them. I've always felt it's more complex than that. These disguises have fooled a large array of people. Even when the Baudelaires donned very simple disguises they were easily able to fool people. I think for the Baudelaire's they could recognize Olaf so easily because of his eyes, it's been a while since I've read the books but I recall his shiny eyes being his tell for them. So it's not that all of his disguises are so poor that even a child could see through them, rather it's that while he can change much of his appearance he can't conceal his evil, watching, eyes. I don't think its unreasonable to give him detailed costumes from time to time, he should be trying ideally to fool even the Baudelaires. I think it would be an interesting change to add moments where the Baudelaire's question themselves in regard to Olaf's disguises, maybe at times add some uncertainty. After all some of his persona's don't do anything that threatening at first.
