Daniel Handler's tweet essentially confirms that this is a fake, but I just wanted to comment on the evidence linked here: This post seems to have a lot of evidence in favour of it being a fake. Because it makes me a little bit sad that, despite all the care and craft put into the trailer, I may ultimately have to disapprove. Putting out a very fine piece of fan marketing is one thing, but dedicating entire Twitter accounts to churning out countless messages that directly lie to people is simply disingenuous and reeks of pride. Ha! The way I saw this trailer was because I was followed by Rachel Vent on Twitter- I looked at her profile, saw her sending the video to loads of people and checked it out. I just assumed that she was a fan. I don't mind if it's fake- they've done a brilliant job in all areas. Execution and promotion (an amazing job with promotion). That video's been the highlight of my day.

It seems fairly clearly not to be real. Check Sixteen's link if in doubt.
Which means that while we can admire it as a work of art, unfortunately it tells is nothing about what the series will be like.
I think for the first time I have got a sense of what 667 must have been like while ASOUE was happening.

Welp now we know it's fake Daniel, Lemony, Netflix and all the team knows exactly what are we waiting. They're gonna make a good effort to make something better than that trailer, and I hope the guys in charge of the fake trailer get hired to be in charge of the series or something. They earned it.

For those of you who are into videogames (specially Nintendo ones), let's not forget this amazing fake trailer of the Majora's Mask remake for Wii U.
Sadly (or not) this kind of beautiful and realistic things happened before and we let the excitement and the hype blind us.

And let's not forget this Doctor Who guy, who made this before series 8. Obviously, the asoue trailer would have required a quite different set of skills, but fan-made stuff can be monstrously good.
A couple other things that are sus: - The HD cap and Mushroom Minutiae, which reference late books. You couldn't fit the first 11 or 12 books into one season, and netflix probably wouldn't even be sure right now how many seasons they're going to do. - To use the name The Gothic Archies, the archie himself would presumably need to give the ok. - The very Helquist-accurate Olaf silhouette and Shirley wig and earrings.
But yeah, whoever made this has mad leech skillz.

A good comparison - and let's also keep in mind that the current DW intro was designed by a fan who posted a concept video on Youtube and subsequently got hired by the BBC. So perhaps there's hope that Eleonora Poe will somehow get involved in the series' development after this. I sure wouldn't mind, if she can hold the teaser's tone!

The trailer (whether fake or real) is amazing.
I personally don't think it's fake at all; it would be just like netflix/handler to get involved in a stunt of this scale to raise awareness, especially considering past promotions for snicket-related stuff

Sixteen's link not only provides evidence that it is fake but gives a clue to who the faker is.
The thing is that when we thought it was real it seems to show Netflix's degree of commitment, and now we no longer have that evidence.
(And if you can get three books into a film of average length, of course you can get twelve into a series. Certainly this would not do justice to their complexity; on the other hand, they may not be certain there will be another series, and it would not be a good idea to leave it in mid air.)

How do you know Sixteen doesn't work for netflix?!
Seriously though, for a fake trailer it's a damn good one.And the fact that netflix responded quickly shows that the show is still very much happening/going ahead- hopefully this'll prompt them to release a teaser/more details (if they have them).
Edit: I'm still bowled over by the attention to detail. There's a book that appears called 'How to Start Fires' for crying out loud.

If it's fake, I'm jealous at this fan's sick skillz.

Ugh, I was so excited -- it looked so good! Still, the fact that Daniel Handler and Netflix themselves seem to think it was good hopefully indicates that the real series should be at least as good -- or at least that they want to make it live up to everyone's expectations after watching the fake teaser.

That's true; I hope that this fake teaser and the attention it's been getting sets the bar for Netflix, which they will want to reach or supersede.

I was surprised to see this trailer (and its subsequent exposure as a fake) get coverage in a number of British newspapers/magazines, including the Radio Times and the Guardian, today as I didn't think ASOUE's profile in the UK was that high these days.

I definitely hope that the response to the teaser lights a fire under Netflix; so much free and positive exposure is a good sign for the success of the venture, and one would hope that this will push them to get a deal done with a director soon.
