I must say I was surprised when I saw it and I loved every second.
I too was disappointed with the prominence of the "old" eye design and scoured the video time and time again looking for the V.F.D eye (luckily it was on book spine!) Hopefully the series will clear up the eye confusion from books 1-8 from 9-13.
If it is fake, these fans know the series and they know it well.
Handler tweeted it and called Eleanora Poe a trickster and that he owes them a gimlet.

Has anybody considered how the poster of the purported fake teaser has permission from The Dresden Dolls to use their music? Under normal circumstances, YouTube would take down videos for copyright infringement, but the fact that it not only includes The Dresden Dolls' music but the fact that The Dresden Dolls have shared the original video on their Facebook page clearly points to the fact that permission was secured to use their music, right? (Link to The Dresden Dolls' Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dresdendolls?fref=ts). And if permission was secured to use The Dresden Dolls' music in the teaser, that would make it more likely that this is either something from Netflix or The Dresden Dolls themselves. Unless securing permission to use the music as they did here be reasonably achievable for a fan smart enough to pull off these stunning visual effects and whatnot? And even if it was a fan, The Dresden Dolls clearly shared it as if it was official - which would indicate either a) this is real, b) it's fake and they know it but the fan got them to play along, or c), this is some elaborate marketing for The Dresden Dolls themselves. The other evidence I've collected thus far includes an assortment of other statements on social media: Netflix commenting on the original YouTube video: imgur.com/qRz9b0WDaniel Handler's tweet (as mentioned by others): imgur.com/XIIHzH7Daniel Handler's wife's tweets (has anybody mentioned this yet?): imgur.com/cOCbSIhThey're all denying that it's real but sort of playing along and teasing us instead of getting it pulled down for using Netflix's logo, which supports the theory that this is indeed part of Netflix's marketing campaign. Handler's wife also says "Fake" in quotation marks. Or maybe it is indeed fake and they're playing along for other reasons. It's definitely possible the thing was made by a fan - would be very difficult, but certainly possible - but would a fan have been able to get permission for the music as well as get The Dresden Dolls to play along with the this-is-real stance? Also, is there any solid evidence that this is fake besides Netflix saying it is so? There's a lot of signs that this could simply be a genius marketing campaign, but I haven't found anything to support the idea that this is fake other than Netflix saying it's fake. EDIT: Haven't finished reading/investigating Sixteen's link, doing that right now

It's equally possible, of course, that The Dresden Dolls assumed licensing had gone through their management; as a fan video that's not making a profit, it's not necessarily automatically a target for a copyright takedown if that's not something the Dresden Dolls or Netflix are actively policing. Added to that, they won't want to take it down as it's been spectacular advertising for everyone involved without them having to pay a cent. Lisa Brown is also putting "Fake" in quotation marks because she is quoting from the source she links.
The background material gathered by Sixteen points to how this could have been a fan-made effort by people with history of this sort of material. I earlier believed that they could have been maintaining plausible deniability for a teaser campaign, but if that was so, I absolutely don't believe that Handler and Lisa Brown would have approached it in the way they have. Handler's response is what killed it stone dead for me.

Handler's response is what killed it stone dead for me. In which case, licensing would have had to go through their management. But then again, I have zero experience in this so I have no idea how doable it would be for a fan to go through TDD's management to get permission to use the music. However, they did share it as if it were real - though this may not be too significant. I had initially jumped at Lisa Brown's statement yesterday as a possibility that it might be real after all, but then it can be open to interpretation, and your interpretation definitely fits as well. My main point with what Netflix etc has been posting on social media was that it certainly pointed to an unconventional marketing campaign - but of course, as you've said, that doesn't necessarily mean they are. So after a bit of poking around on IMDb and thru Sixteen's post, I've discovered the official website for Digital Artist Coalition (http://digitalartistcoalition.com/), the people who claim to be behind this teaser and the fake AHS teaser as well. They also claim to have worked on the actual AHS TV show too, since season 2. But I haven't found good verification that this site is legit, and I'm also not entirely sure what the entire backstory behind the AHS thing was, aside from what Sixteen pointed out (I'm a much bigger fan of Snicket than AHS ).

I keep seeing people reacting negatively to the Helquist-accurate Olaf profile, and I don't see why its such a bad thing; I was just able to show the teaser to my mom and we both agreed that having an Olaf that looks similar to the Helquist representation would make it so frickin' perfect when they get around to making the show. Also, does anyone want to venture a guess about who the lock of hair belongs to? Violet or maybe even Kit?

I tried to list every detail I could notice from this teaser, since I have a bit of spare time on my hands : - The Gothic Archive vinyl (notice its title "Le compositeur est mort", which means "The Composer is Dead" !) - "Medusa", painting by Caravaggio - Bottles of wine - A rope (it could be a reference to what the Baudelaire siblings create to save Sunny, but I don't see any hook) - A snake - A curl of hair - A ribbon - "Nuptial Law" book - Tickets to "The Marvelous Marriage" - The marriage license, with Violet's name - The Daily Punctilio headline "Baudelaire Tragic Fire" - Hotel Denouement hat + bell + room key - "Mushroom Minutiae" book - Mushrooms in a jar - Esmé's cigarette - Shirley's wig + jewelry - The Lucky Smells Lumbermills "map" (I can't remember the exact English word, sorry) + a "Lucky Smells Lumbermills" medallion of some sort. - The Paltryville Constitution - "Advanced Ocular Science", Dr Orwell's book which Violet reads in TMM (thank you, Lemona Snicket ! ) - A crow - "How to Start Fires" book - VFD symbol - Glasses (à la Klaus) - "Main Street" book, by Lewis (Doesn't ring a bell to me.. Anyone ?) - Pasta alla Puttanesca - Eyes design on dishes - Lacrymose Leech - Lacrymose Lake map - Dirty Fingernails (Olaf) - Tarot cards - Caligari cards If this truly is fanmade, then this person will do great things ! It's amazingly rich in details and wonderfully executed. My opinion is that mayyyyybe Netflix is saying that this isn't theirs so that everybody will talk about it, and rewatch it in order to judge for themselves "if it looks real or not" (increasing views and leading to mouth to mouth effect). This is a honest question, I don't use it to back up my theory, but how did this channel (which got created on the 2nd of June - my bday by the way yay, haha) get so many views on the first video they released ? Did Netflix directly speak about it ?

I was surprised to see this trailer (and its subsequent exposure as a fake) get coverage in a number of British newspapers/magazines, including the Radio Times and the Guardian, today as I didn't think ASOUE's profile in the UK was that high these days. Wow. Well, that could be considered as another point for the it's-real side (though I'm doubtful). Otherwise, Netflix is certainly getting a big bit of publicity for their series out of something they didn't do. - A book entitled "Advanced ..." but I can't figure out the rest of the title, does it ring a bell to anyone ? Advanced Ocular Science, Dr Orwell's book which Violet reads in TMM.

Advanced Ocular Science, Dr Orwell's book which Violet reads in TMM. Right, thank you very much ! If anything, i hope this teaser shows Netflix that there's definitely a market for this, so they better bring their A GAME, haha !

If the trailer is indeed fake, why wouldn't netflix sue them for use of their logo and secured rights to the television series? Furthermore, I believe 'fake' in quotation marks is highly unlikely to be a quotation from a statement- it's a mere one word; people normally quote in that manner in multiple sentences. Both the tone of tweets from DH and Lisa Brown reek of lighthearted irony.
As for the helquist-esque olaf profile, I really liked it. ASoUE is always going to have that gothic-carticture feel about it.

I can't really have an opinion on the Helquistesque Olaf profile without seeing what it would look like on a real human being. Trying to be too close to an illustration not done in a realistic style can look ridiculous, but Carrey's Olaf in the movie pulled it off well enough.
I also think people overestimate the degree to which companies and groups care about pulling non-profit fan-made videos. Well, it can vary between companies, but this teaser, unoffocial or not, has done nothing but good for Netflix and ASoUE.

Ooh- look at this guys! imaneuroticmess.tumblr.com/post/123540707360/all-the-unfortunate-developments-so-far @dante @dante DanteThis is the content of the post: Hello Snicketards, I regret to inform you there is a conspicuous conspiracy surrounding Netflix’s new series based on the documents of Lemony Snicket. Is treachery afoot? YOU BE THE JUDGE as I break down the series of unfortunate twists and turns in this controversial calamity. July 5th - The trailer is posted by Eleanora Poe. The account was created one month prior. Eleanora Poe is the editor-in-cheif of The Daily Punctilio, which is the deceptive and faulty newspaper featured in the novels. - The image of Eleanora on the aforementioned account is Laura Jean Libbey, a 19th and 20th century author who happened to write a book about a young heiress who is forced at gunpoint to marry so her husband can claim her inheritance. July 6th - Netlix claimes it is “not official” and “not from us”. - Lemony Snicket owes Eleanora a gimlet. Netflix retweets this. The musician behind the music in the trailer retweets the trailer. - After suspicion that Warner Music Group would not allow an unauthorized video to use the Dresden Dolls music - a link is found between the leader singer, Amanda Palmer and Daniel Handler. Handler’s band “The Gothic Archies” provided music for the audiobook of Coraline. Amanda Palmer is married to the author of Coraline. - The trailer ends with the Netflix logo on a piece of parchment in a typewriter. A screenshot of this moment was found on multuple sites since at least June 2015. One was found on Reddit and another on AVClub.com. - Jack Griffo (Nickelodeon’s “The Thundermans”) tweets that his friends created the video and it was done “for Netflix”. July 7th - The cinematographer’s Instagram post is found, with an image of Count Olaf’s silhouette on the screen of a camera. @jbrunofilm claims it was made for Netflix’s series, declines to comment if he is involved with Netflix or the series itself. Claims the spot is “unofficial”. Fans pout. - The website is found for the videos special effects. This team created effects for such high-profile projects as “American Horror Story” , “Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman”, “Hoovy” and several ride-films for SeaWorld. Likely, United Artists Coalition would be too high-profile a group to work on a YouTube fan video. Fans regain their faith. - Eleanora Poe joins Twitter. To date, she has one tweet. She follows users such as Daniel Handler, Amanda Palmer, Warner Music Group, Netflix and JBrunoFilms; among others. - Astute fans notice a phone number on Eleanora’s Twitter page. When dialed, a woman announces the caller has reached the Daily Punctilio and instructs them to leave a message. The number is registered in California. Fans cheer. STAY TUNED FOR MORE UNNERVING UPDATES!! horrorinthegraveyard.tumblr.com/post/123540034889/so-i-called-elenora-poe-for-some-answersRecording of some girl calling the number??? Update: Apparently the phone number doesn't work anymore, which was just as well because i didnt want my parents to get angry at me calling california from scotland http://instagram.com/p/4zx0f9Hg08 read the comments on this twitter.com/EleanoraPoeteam #itsreal

-I don't think it's particularly outrageous that a high-profile group would make a fan video, though perhaps it's surprising that they would have time. Their experience is merely evidence that they would have the high production values shown in the thing.
- The phone number thing a) is cool and b) is indicative of either something official or some very attentive and well-executed unofficial thing.
- The entry about Palmer-Handler links was somewhat wrong and very incomplete, but w/e.
