In LSTUA, in Jacques' letter to Jerome, Jacques states that Olaf's attitudes at the time of the major events recorded in TBB, TRR, TWW and TAA were called a recent schism. However, in the same book it is stated that Olaf had already shown himself to be a violent person and a declared enemy of Lemony Snicket since the time when Lemony almost married Beatrice. Due to Violet's age, we can conclude with certainty that Lemony's almost marriage to Beatrice happened more than 14 years before the main events recorded in TBB. In addition, at the time of Lemony's quasi wedding, the journalistic column about secret organizations that you need to know at TDP started. Possibly, the events involving Lemony's quasi-wedding to Beatrice had been more than 15 years earlier, as Lemony had fled abroad and it was probably some time before Beatrice married Bertrand, as according to TBL, Lemony spent a few years without see Beatrice until when he heard she was pregnant. It is reasonable to believe that almost 20 years have passed between Olaf's quasi-marriage and the main events recorded in TBB.
Geraldine Julienne called this column "old column" at the time when Esme and Jerome was about to meet, and we know that Esmé and Jerome were married after a single meeting. It was at the same time that Jacques wrote to Jerome asking him not to marry, and it was at that time that he said that Olaf's actions were a recent schism.
I believe that Olaf has spent a good deal of time, at least 14 years, without appearing to be a real threat to VFD. He was there, in his mansion, when because of a banker's decision Beatrice's children fell into his hands. Why didn't VFD do anything against Olaf for at least 14 years, nor did Olaf attack VFD villainy for at least 14 years? Of course, the answer to that question is in the field of hypotheses, as there is nothing canonical to help us answer that question definitively.
But I have a new hypothesis for the matter. And it is based on the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". In Gregor Anwhistle's day, the fire-extinguishing side was experiencing a schism. Kit talked about it in a letter she sent to Gregor. Medusoid Mycelium was indeed a danger to all mankind and needed to be destroyed. But the fire-extinguishing side would not personally set fire to anything. So, I believe that they had to count on the help of Olaf and his supporters. Unfortunately it would not be enough to destroy Medusoid Mycelium itself, but it would also be necessary to destroy those who believed that Medusoid Mycelium could be used in some evil way. And in that way Gregor was murdered by Fernald, who had decided to support Olaf. Fernald is not proud of that, but he understands that it was necessary. I believe that Mrs. Widdershins also died for the same reason. This violent but justified act by Olaf and his supporters would have been rewarded by a truce. Olaf could live peacefully in the City. He could be an actor and author of plays, as he always wanted. Olaf would be Fernald's guardian so to speak.
