OH EM EF GEE.
First: The Penultimate Peril is an awesome title. Pure brilliance. Penultimate is an awesome word, and it's meaning is even cooler. Peril is an equally skilled word. I like how the abscence of a "thing" like Slope, or Room, or Window as in the other titles, is absent, which gives us a sense of the cycle starting again (i.e Bad Beginning).
Second, Daniel Handler is an incredible writer. I LOVE how he just dropped those two bombshells on us, Kit being pregnant, and the accidental death in Chapter Nine. Though I doubt it will be a gun...so far, there haven't been too many guns in the series (save the harpoon one in TVV, but that can hardly be called a proper gun). But the death WILL be accidental.
As to Kit's pregnancy, I am greatly curious in who the father is. And, sadly, I think Kit will die in this book, though that would cause quite some havoc due to the secret messages to her in TSS. Hmm....
In summary: Daniel Handler is a god amongst insects in the literature world.

In summary: Daniel Handler is a god amongst insects in the literature world. I'd agree with this. "If this is true, then the book you are reading now is the perfect thing to drop into a pond." So does anyone think that the "Pearl" that Snicket apparently threw in the ocean from last week's telegram was actually the "Peril"? That, combined with the editor's CC that this was the next-to-last one, could have given you the title, but not in a way anyone could have forseen easily.

The message said "it was not a giant pearl" which could mean it was actually a thick book with "peril" in its title. I wonder why he'd throw his own book into the ocean; maybe it was in a waterproof container and someone was supposed to find it, possibly in a submarine. He might have been weeping at the thought of them having to read such a tragic story, or maybe he was terribly afraid that the plan wouldnt' work.

According to the message this morning, Snicket is now being seen everywhere warning people not to read the book. Snicket's always been very mysterious about these books - he's vowed to write everything down, but he constantly warns us not to read it. It makes me wonder if he feels that he or VFD let the orphans down somehow and is trying to make amends, but he just can't bring himself to add more misery to the world.

The surprise of the first chapter was great. I'm not getting the book until tomorrow, so it was good to have something to read while waiting impatiently. I'm thinking that the woman with the chopsticks in her hair on the cover is Kit, since she has pencils in her hair in the first chapter. Either that or her disguise is one of many similar oriental disguises that will be used. And the revelation of Kit being pregnant is phenomenal. Who could she be married to? (I'm pretty sure Handler will make her married, since this is a children's book after all)
I'm sure my musings will seem pretty stupid to people who have already read the book, but I'll find the answers to my questions tomorrow, at least. Now, I think it's time for me to leave this sight until I've read the entire book, so I don't get spoiled.

I've already seen the cover, but, where did you get that?

Anything you get from TheNamelessNovel.com is allowed in this thread. Spoilers which you don't get are removed. Eye, I've removed the cover from your post, therefore. Well, this was much better than a VFDescribed - and Chapter One was very unexpected. This was great. (However, discussion of Chapter One exclusively, for those who haven't got the book yet, should go in this thread.) This thread will be de-stickied and locked tomorrow, as it will no longer be valid. Therefore, I suggest you get in your last comments before then.

Among my final comments (I'll probably think of more later) I'd like to say a big thanks to Dante for keeping our Community Commonplace Book on the TNN clues in the Walkthrough thread. It was so helpful. You must have worked long and hard to put it all there, and I (among many, I'm sure) am very grateful.

Hear! Hear! Thank you Dante for all your help! (I probably referred to the CCB than I care to admit.)

I also want to thank Dante for the helpful Transcript/Walkthrough thread, which I referred to often. And for being a great mod and contributor to discussions in general.

Thank you. It was difficult and tiring to get up early in the morning and update the thread every day before school, but I considered it my duty. Also, I was secretly hoping that you'd all thank me eventually.
