I say not completely an accident but thats what i voted, because of the contractions and refractions of light. It's "convergence and refraction", and that was the cause of the fire in the movie, not the books. Movie clues are not applicable to the books. Okay thanks Ant, I have always hated how directors make movies that are so out of touch with the books.

well no the torches probably aren't complex really, just enhanced enough to cause destruction fast. I mean, Quigley said all the Montgomery mansion was in fire within SECONDS and that's pretty fast considering it started in a room walled by glass and that mansion was fairly huge.

Considering that these mansions are made of wood and full of books, I should think that they would burn fairly quickly.

I saw a theory about that a very long time ago... That bad VFD waited for years to stage their attacks until the emerald green lumber aged and gradually dried out, becoming flammable...

Perhaps that's why there was such a delay(15-25 years, apparently) between the schism and the burning of the Baudelaire mansion.

i think it is either count olaf or the man with a beard but no hair or the woman with no hair but no beard. or both.....but i voted for count olaf like many others! i still suspect the two other troupe members, particularily because olaf himself is scared of them, or at least is very nervous around them.

I don't think that Olaf and the other villains on the fire-starting side of the schism are patient enough to wait 15-25 years to burn down the homes of their enemies - and it's not really a very good reason for the delay.

Another possible reason for the delay in villainy was that Olaf was in jail, or being closely monitored by VFD somehow. By the time he got out, or was no longer monitored for whatever reason, the mansions had dried to an easier-to-burn state, sort of an added convenience.

Or, as I prefer to think, the schism had calmed down - but then everything flared up again, for some reason. We really need to know what Olaf and the Baudelaire parents were discussing.

I imagine them trying to negotiate a truce of some sort between the two sides. Perhaps Olaf thought he might get the fortune without the effort of burning down the house, but it became clear to him that he wouldn't.
Then again, Olaf is a pretty vicious person, so burning the mansion probably wouldn't be a horrible chore for him.

Another person voted Lemony, too.

Negotiating a truce? I prefer to believe Olaf was threatening them, or trying to put up a good guy facade to trick them into believing he'd changed into a better person... Then when he still couldn't get what he wanted he returned and burned the place down.
