Hypochondria. How interesting. I wonder if this may be connected with the mushrooms? A hypochondriac inadvertently eats one of the mushrooms and just as inadvertently finds out about it shortly after. Being a hypochondriac, this person’s distress at discovering they have just consumed a mushroom of dubious nutritional value will be completely ignored by all of his or her fellows as it will be regarded as just another in a long line of hypochondriac fits. His or her fellows will be duly shocked when the hypochondriac suddenly and completely unexpectedly drops dead from a terrible case of poisoning, after a long and elaborate act of pretending to be dying from poisoning, complete with seizures and foaming at the mouth, which is only to be expected from a hypochondriac who has claimed they have eaten a poisoned mushroom. Just because you’re a hypochondriac doesn’t mean you’re not dying. I like your thinking, Tullae. That seems to be a good theory. Long lost friend + hypochondria ( + grotto) make me think of Aunt Josephine and her irrational fears. Quite. And Frodo, that Aunt Josephine isn't dead is my theory, and that she dyed her hair, used contact lenses, etc is all true. Tocuna: Thanks! For! This! Tidbit! Of! Spoilers! It made my day! Lemony Snicket's upsetting serial about the perfectly likeable but hopelessly doomed Baudelaire orphans continues to depress readers everywhere. In this eleventh installment in A Series of Unfortunate Events, the ill-fated siblings are adrift in a sea of awfulness that includes a submarine, a determined villain with a stylish girlfriend, mushrooms, an alarming message from a lost friend, and hypochondria. This dark, damp, distressing chronicle is likely the worst yet in what has become a deeply disturbing worldwide phenomenon. Yay!

I like your thinking, Tullae. That seems to be a good theory. I am most gratified you think so. It was kind of you to mention as much. While I was quite familiar with one meaning of Hypochondria, the existance of a second meaning took me quite by surprise. To use a key word that the majority of people are unaware is polysemous is just the sort of Red Herring Mr. Snicket is likely to leak for a press release. Although in this case, my theory that it may refer to the presence of more than one hypochondrium does seem a little far-fetched.

Does the word "hypochondria" in its commoner sense derive from the word for the upper abdomen in some way? I'd guess if it did, it would have to do with heavy breathing and chest pains contributing to delusions of clinical illness. Somehow, it seems unlikely that Lemony would include a body part with an irregular plural in his "ingredient list" for a book. He's never included anything quite so arbitrary, unless you count that casserole dish from TSS. If this is a polysemous red herring, it's a first.

Just a thought They mention Olaf on every blurb like "An evil man with a sneaky plot" Or they do it on most of them...this one won't change.

The Barnesandnoble.com synopses for the books all mention Olaf, sometimes not by name. The one for The Slippery Slope mentions him, and also includes the memorable phrase "alpine-themed cliffhanger". So it's Olaf and Esme they speak of, a villain and his stylish girlfriend. Who else fits that description?

I always suspected that those two unknown arsonists were Olaf's brother and sister. They acted like his older siblings, and would be M and N on the family tree. And they don't particularly pay attention to fashion. I mean, they wore the same fireproof suits for a month. Out of necessity, but still.... [shadow=red,left,300]Another spoiler:Rumor has it that an important character will die in book 11. Not very helpful, really.[/shadow]

I heard that rumor at another board, but the person who spoke of it there didn't verify his sources. Also, I agree that it will likely be Hooky, or any one of the henchmen. Someone speculated that it would be Esme, or even Olaf, or a Baudelaire. But I'm hoping it will be Kevin. Anyone who regularly reads my posts knows what I think of Kevin.

nope sry cant be a henchperson, remember they were all recruited with the snow scouts, but i've been correct about thing with all the other books like the carmelita thing so im thinking if anyone leaves it will be esme but i doubt she will die o and also i see aunt josephine as the one who sends a message only because she was suposedly killed in the sea and the baudsa er gunna be in a submarine

I think it will be Esme, because why would they mention "stylish-girlfriend" again? Because she is going to die. Just a pretty far-fetched thought, though.

If Esme is the one to die, I'm sure it will be in a very 'in' way. Some way that she will be able to have an open casket wearing her 'in' pinstripe suit or perhaps even her giving-the-impression-of-fire gown. Of course, if she is wearing that, it would have to be an unusually large casket for it to all fit inside. It is a very large dress.
My point is, one cannot have an open casket if one dies in a way that mangles one's body. Therefore, some ways she would certainly never allow herself to die would include falling off a cliff, being eaten by sharks, or lions, or any other animal with sharp teeth, or getting caught in a fire. A death that would leave her in quite an acceptable state for facing the grave would be poisoning. In fact, I've heard that poisoning is very 'in'.
I've also heard that certain mushrooms are poisonous.

...after eating the mushrooms (whether on purpose or accidently), she suspects them being deadly (perhaps they aren't "in" mushrooms), but no one believes her, they think she's just being spazzy and hypochondriatic because of the shock of eating a not-"in" mushroom....
