You know, I've thought for a while how odd it is that we have individual threads in some of the other sections about what we liked about, say, TWW or TEE or TVV, but not any on the Gloom Looms books.
I got really into Snicket around the time TSS was published. In the U.S., anyway; it got delayed by like six months in Britain, and I ended up having to get a U.S. edition first because I couldn't wait. And I loved it, because they really seemed to play up the moral ambiguity, and because it introduced two of my favourite characters - the man with a beard but no hair, and the woman with hair but no beard. Their entrance scene is, for me, the highlight of the book. (Favourite comedy moment: Olaf telling the Baudelaires they're outnumbered, and Klaus pointing out that they're actually not.)

TSS was the second book that I really looked forward to, I recall, and probably the first that I discussed online(on a little forum which I think has since been deleted). I thought the Snow Scouts and Carmelita's return were great, and I agree with Dante that the Baudelaire's moral ambiguity became more prominent and interesting. The scene with the pit-trap for Esme was particularly good.

I loved the "Quigley survived" thing! It's like a small ray of hope in the Snicketverse. Quigley is now my favourite character.

I didn't like it too much, well at least not compared to the other books in the series. The whole Quigley survived plot was good but I didn't feel it was that entertaining. There was rarely any laugh out loud moments or rather depressing moments which could bring me close to tears. It was also a bit sappy with the Sunny, "I'm not a baby" thing going on.

Yeah, it was somewhat sappy. But all the recent books have been about the whole moral ambiguity thing and that. The plot was excellent, though, so it was overall quite good.

Eh, I quite liked Sunny growing up, but then again, I can be sappy sometimes. Also, Sunny was my favorite character at the time.
TSS was a great book. There was a lot more information than some of the others books - Quigley being alive (which meant that a parent probably wasn't), finding out the last safe place, finding people more evil than Olaf - actually, I was sure there was more than this. Well, I still enjoyed it.

I am sorry I haven't replied.
I think that you are right ,Ligeia. Since Quigley survived, I don't think either of the parents did. I am on TGG and love it!!! It is a GREAT book so far. I think that the Captian Widershins is hilarious!

I liked The Slippery Slope because it had a good plot and it kept me interested. (Even though all the books did.) I also enjoyed Sunny making fun of Olaf about his hygiene.
