I think TSS was one of my favorites. It's probably because I've found I don't like the books unless I hear them on tape (hence why this one, the first I heard on tape, was one of my favorites). I loved the whole VFD HQ, especially when he described it at its peak existance. It's like a dream place for me. With the addition of Quigley, I was pretty happy. I had wanted a reunion scene. But from what I've read in book 12, I was a tad upset. And the Violet/Quigley pairing was perfect. Though I've had doubts about him, I think he's my favorite character other than the three main charcters (and Captain Widdershins).

Oh yeah, VFD HQ sounded glorious. All the more reason for me to be very angry with the sinister duo for burning it down.

I think TSS is the most poorly written of all the SOUE books. It does improve in the second half of the book though.

I enjoyed TSS mostly, as aforementioned by Dismay and Jacques, because of the HQ introduction and the thickening of the plot.

How long ago was this thread written anyway?

About a year ago, and last posted in before yourself about a week ago. Any comments to make about TSS?

In future, please refrain from making posts completely unrelated to the thread's subject-- such posts may be deleted or may result in warnings if you keep it up. Oh, and if you wish to know how long ago something was posted, there are time-stamps on every post here.

Okay thanks for the info. Shouldn't this thread be in the archives anyway?

I was extremely bothered by the part where the Baudelaires decide it would be "too villainous" to trap Esme in the pit. They should have figured out by that point that you can't always be noble when fighting villains (to use the series' terminology).
That said, I found the bit where Lemony gave Violet and Quigley their privacy far funnier than I should have.

Because of their decision not to go ahead with the pit trap, I originally thought that TSS was the end of the whole "morally ambiguous" streak, especially when the Baudelaires themselves didn't do anything suspect in TGG; however, since the whole thing's brought back tenfold in TPP, then in retrospect, it does seem sort of pointless for them to have changed their minds about dropping Esmé in a pit (which she once did to them). Maybe they should just have been paralysed by indecision instead.

TSS was one of the better ones. . .but then again I like all of books 8-13. That is when the ambiguity really begins.
Quigley's pretty much the best person in the series.

Thanks, lunafan. About Quigley or about the last half of the series?
