Yes.
Information in the U.A., in the letter from "Captain S. (a.k.a. J.)" to Lemony Snicket on page 109, has been interpreted by some as meaning that there is a real individual named Captain Julio Sham who Olaf was impersonating (the surname being ironic). I personally favour the theory that each disguise has a generic name associated with it, which would explain why all the disguise names are literary allusions, rather than an anagram of Count Olaf's name. (Note that some of these theories are based on retroactive continuity, but since the series uses a lot of that then it is valid.) The U.A. letter, even if there is a real Captain Julio Sham, would indicate that he was not the captain of the ship at that time - the writer, though his first name apparently was J., said that he was merely disguised as Captain S. That's ambiguous enough for Handler to do whatever he wants with, though.
Also, all my former bets are off on the plot of aSoUE, given the number of inconsistencies, ignored clues, nonsensical clues, and retroactive continuity. I now hold no definite opinions - now I just have a few ideas I like, and others I like less, and accept that I'll probably like whatever Handler does.

I agree. It's nearly impossible to hold on to a single theory and have solid evidence to back it up. I would say that we shouldn't theorize, but it's way too hard to do.

Yeah it can't really murder anyone can it which is quite depressing. So what would it be doing? Just a sunny viper reunion? Perhaps it could send some coded messages. "Sssummer is over and out" It was actually the Mamba du Mal that was mentioned, in the U.A., as being able to communicate such coded messages. The U.A. also stated that the Mamba du Mal was now dead and in the possession of the Esmé Squalor fan club, so I don't think that will be the returning reptile - well, it's obviously going to be the IVD, but we have to be careful all the same. Snicket could twist it again and say the Punctilio was wrong again. Anyway, I guess the IDV could also have learnt to communicate such messages, but I basically wanted to fill in this information here. Oops my mistake . I think it would definately more interesting if the Mamba du mal returned rather than IDV as it can speak in code plus it is more of a threat/ misfortune. I'm not sure wether to believe the snake is dead or not, as it was bidded on, it sounds a bit strange that someone noble or wicked would bid on a dead snake.

Ah, but what if it was in?

Very true after all it was auctioned off in the 'In' auction. But still, I have my doubts. It sounds suspicious that the bidder did not wish to be identified.

I saw this article earlier (about a week ago, I think), but I'm not sure where. Maybe it'll come back to me. When I first read it, I thought "Wow, cool!" but now I want more info.

The article is interesting. Whatever Snicket decides to do, he have to be truthful to his statements. IDV coming back? At least another noble one from the past!
Speaking of bidding *quite off-topic* where did Olaf tell somebody about someone who will help him in his bidding?

I think it's the IDV. Didn't the Esme Squalor fan club buy the dead mamba? And I'd prefer the IDV over the mamba, because the IDV was friendly and such. I was sad when it had to go away. When did Olaf tell what? *confused*

*is also confused by Alfred's question so decides to comment on Jacques last statement instead* The IDV would be no fun Jacques, what use would it be? Apart from an all so jolly Sunny reunion...only if it were to be killed....or if it were to somehow kill someone or do something which leads to their death (seeing as it can''t directly harm a person) would I find it fun.

Personally if I had to choose I'd rather be reunited with a trusted and fiersome looking but good friend rather than a poisonous killing machine but that's just me. I really don't see why the snake has to be deadly or killed for you to find it at all interesting.

I disagree with you both. (Surprise!)
I'm not hoping for a Sentimental!Viper, but nor do I want a Killing Machine!Viper.
What I'm hoping for is a VFD!Viper, with vital information to tell...

I really don't see why the snake has to be deadly or killed for you to find it at all interesting. Naturally I would rather meet such a viper you speak of but I'd rather READ about a viper that'd bring action to the story. I disagree with you both. (Surprise!) I'm not hoping for a Sentimental!Viper, but nor do I want a Killing Machine!Viper. What I'm hoping for is a VFD!Viper, with vital information to tell... Yeah that was one of the reasons why I wanted the mambu du mal to be the returning reptile.

The Viper displayed clear intelligence-I'm sure it's up to communicating in code too...

I'd have to agree with all of your points. Though I would love a reptile that could communicate, seeing how much I love TUA. (You know, "Summer is over and gone")

The off-topic question that I thought of about bidding has been quite confusing because I'm stupid.
Sorry.
It was Esme all along. She said this in TSS while they have Sunny Baudelaire as a kidnap victim on Mount Fraught.
*talking to Aura of Menaceers* "That's the youngest Baudelaire. We're keeping this one around to do our bidding, until we steal the Baudelaire fortune"
I assume that this will happen also in B13, because their hasn't been(? - grammar) something mentioned about some bidding in both book 11 and 12.
