The Carnivorous Carnival: Actually Lemony says he was an archduke and i was watching this movie in my french class where this archduke became a count so Count Olaf's parents were still alive when Kit ran away with him and when his parents were killed he became a count instead of his father.

That's very interesting, Violet. Can you tell us what movie? I had thought that an archduke was higher than a count (and I had heard that only one family uses the title anyway).

Snicket's rather soft-hearted. I'm not sure if he'd have it in him to hate a person.

the movie was the Count of Monte Cristo, it has to do with French history. i remember that the main character becomes a Count after he obtains a lot of wealth and is considered a 'noble'. so i think that maybe Olaf's parents were very wealthy and had formerly had the title which was passed onto Olaf when they died. if that's not the case maybe Snicket was trying to confuse us by using archduke instead of count. a few other people have been saying the archduke and count are equal. It's like William and Kate because Kate is going to be called a Duchess because Diana was a Princess but both titles mean basically the same thing.

I thought Monte Cristo was not realy a count, just posing as one. Of course, it's possible Olaf is as well - and also that he previously posed as an archduke. Well, within a specific system of nobility, these titles do mean different things, and it's not a good idea to mix them up when actually talking to the people concerned. They may amount to the same for practical purposes, though. (Though I think there are a lot more counts than archdukes.)

I believe that Olaf had been chasing after Kit and B.B., so that's why Olaf told Kit: "I told you I'd do that one more time" I do believe that Olaf set fire to the Baudelaire house, and I think so because he had been in love with the B. mother himself, and, when she found the horrifice deeds he had done, rejected him, he got angry and set fire to her home, years and years later, when the fortune was at the peak of perfection. I could be wrong, but another theory of mine was that the B. mother had driven Olaf to his dastardly deeds. I am very confused here now.
