I'm not sure if this is really important. And I'm sure I don't have all of the facts straight since I'm too lazy to go into the library down the hall and get the books...but I'll give it a shot anyways.
When Olaf kissed Kit in TE, he said something like 'he had promised he would kiss her one last time'
Lemony once mentioned that his sister had run away with a man, a duke or something. Maybe this man was Count Olaf?

Isn't a duke more powerful then a count...? (or perhaps the other way around...) Plus, Lemony didn't really say it was HIS sister that planned to run off with a duke. He could have been talking about someone else.

I can't remember what book it was said in - although I believe it was something to do with rifling through other people's belongings - but I think it might have been a generic statement that didn't necessarily apply to his family. Also, if I recall correctly, it was an archduke.

matchless's quote makes it quite apparent that it was Lemony's own sister who was being referred to. However, an archduke and a count are dissimilar. Bummer.

matchless's quote makes it quite apparent that it was Lemony's own sister who was being referred to. That's the implication, but you can work around it - Lemony's also made such references where he's directly referred to himself as the person doing the escaping, eavesdropping, etc. (e.g. TGG p225-226, although that sounds like another throwaway anecdote that there's little to be learnt from).

Right. Snicket could have gotten it mixed up. Maybe that's why Lemony hates Olaf so much?

Maybe that's why Lemony hates Olaf so much? Most likely

Naturally, if Olaf and Kit did have a relationship in the past, then the so-called "Family Tree" in TUA is now beyond error and, most definately, a VFD ranking chart appossed to a genealogical diagram.

Wow, never thought of that! But it would make sense...
Wasn't Olaf pretty high-ranking, though?

I don't believe so, but there doesn't seem to be much evidence for ranking anyone anywhere; an R. was once a "Vice-Chancellor" on a Building Committee (wouldn't surprise me if that position was rotated, either), but for the most part it seems people just did whatever missions they were set, be that teaching codes or murdering opera performers. And my view on the Family Tree is that it's stopped making sense as either a family tree or as a ranking diagram, unless we assume that certain initials do not, in fact, relate to the most obvious person (e.g., D., E. and F. not being the Denouements, G., H. and I. not being the Anwhistles, O. not being Olaf (Olivia might still work, though), etc.) and instead represent figures who have never been mentioned.

Why is it apparent that Lemony was referring to his own sister? If he was, he probably would have said that. He's directly referred to his sister several times, why not do so in that instance if he meant to? He makes plenty of random detours like that without necessarily relating them to himself.

It was probably a red herring, thrown in there to lead readers into the wrong path, which Handler does a lot.

Did anyone eles think that Olaf was the father of the baby? Was it ever said that Dewey was the father?
