Quigley described the lions as once having been Volunteer Feline Detectives, but nowadays they seem to lean more towards Voracious Freak Disposal.

What the - See, I'd have no problem with somebody posting here in this thread, even though it's so old, with something relevant. It's arguably a necessary and important topic. But this is just random advertising, it doesn't even belong here. I'm not even sure what it is. But that post doesn't belong here. Wistful Web or Menacing Miscellaneous would be more likely. So, strike one for bumping an old thread with useless advertising.

I think V.F.D. stands for Volunteer Fire Department

Well, the organisation I would say is Volunteer Fire Department. That is what it has seemed to be for the past couple of books, and it makes a lot of sense and all. But the reeeeal meaning....Violet For Duncan *nods emphatically* Quigley was just a distraction.

hahaha. We'll say that there are lots of different VFDs. Everywhere. But the broadest VFD that seems to encompass the minor VFDs would be Volunteer Fire Department since widdershins stated that that's what the whole thing started out as. Soon they just used VFD to describe the whole sprawling list of operations and suborganizations under the mother-VFD.

Indeed? I feel special now. I'll just stop posting in this thread before someone challenges my conclusion and makes me feel stupid.

I think that VFD stands for Volunteer Fire Apartment. But then again, it can and does stand for many other things.

Apartment? You mean department? I'm curious to see what final VFD acronyms Handler will invent for The End.

This is directed at Dante, about the mysterious intitals- J.S. I thought we had established that J.S. is Jaques Snicket??

How? The jam-jar J.S. could have been Jacques, despite what Widdershins said, because people might not have known that he died. But Quigley wouldn't have copied a telegram to a dead man, and a dead man can't send Mr. Poe to a beach or invite Sir to a cocktail party or help Charles find the Baudelaires or sneak around in a basement trying to ruin a cocktail party or watch the skies. (And I personally have my doubts about whether Jerome Squalor and Justice Strauss can account for all these instances of J.S., either.)

Oh yeah, I'm really sorry, but I skipped a book and can get kind of confused.
