'Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid'. Has anybody heard of this? It's supposed to come out on May 1, 2007, and have 96 pages. Also coming out on the same day is 'A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the 1st: Or, Orphans' and 'A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the Second: Or, Murder'. Please let me Know if you heard of it. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/253263/images/gyZyPdpTJpFsdIDUBhZa.gif)

A quick Google reveals that there will be the Horseradish book. "He's finishing up a murder mystery for children called "The Composer is Dead," which will be released with an audio recording by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Scheduled for May is "Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid," a book of Snicket wisdom that Rich says is taken from his books, "personal papers, conversations at dinner parties and anarchist rallies." www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061008/LIFESTYLE01/610080302/1031/LIFESTYLE01It is also listed on Amazon but that's never proven anything. I can't find mention of the other two books. Probably because the titles are so similar to the current books.

...Okay, I'll grant you, they actually exist. Or they're listed on Amazon, at any rate. I found an article that mentioned Horseradish, which states that it's "a book of Snicket wisdom that Rich says is taken from his books, "personal papers, conversations at dinner parties and anarchist rallies."" ( Loving Lemony) (Gigi, you beat me on this one). The latter two look like reprints of the first two books; they're apparently by HarperTrophy, and 224 pages according to Amazon.com, which I think makes them longer than the original first two books. Great, more money sucked from us. Pity I've been avoiding Snicket articles for the past few days, as I'd liked to have known about that earlier. Ah well. Hm, this technically belongs here, but I'm not sure if it'll get the most attention here, either. But I'll have to think about that tomorrow.

The article does quote Susan Rich, who we've heard mentioned before as Snicket's editor. Maybe once the hoopla dies down, I'll send some e-mail inquiries to H-C.

The Horseradish Book looks quite interesting if it does exist. As for the other two, I'm reminded of TBB:RE, although they don't seem like titles that Snicket/Handler would give.

Ooh! New, longer editions of the first books? Could this mean what I think it means? Is Snicket editing the first few books to
a) be up-to-par with his current writing style AND
b) contain more V.F.D. stuff??? (sorta like the changes in the movie)

I read about the re-prints, but I was under the impression that all 13 were being released at once.

Hmm...sounds interesting, '09er, and these are probably it.
Although it begs the question: What is a 'penny novel of yore'?

Penny novels are like . . . Horatio Alger. Cheap fiction in the early 20th century printed for the masses, usually of pretty low quality. images.google.com/images?client=safari&rls=en&q=penny%20novel&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wiThe first result has a good approximation. I think these books will be cheaper . . . maybe $5 each? A couple dollars more or less? I mean, they're paperback, and the paper should be pretty low quality if they're trying to approximate the era like they do the Victorian era with the hardcovers. EDIT: Also they were pretty sensationalistic, as was the fashion at the time. So the "Orphans!" headline would look like the title of the book, maybe, in huge ornate type, and it would look like this old book but you would see that it was an ASoUE book when you looked closer and read some of the smaller text.

Possibly rewrites (I hope), but most likely reprints.
Oh well. Even if they aren't rewrites, I'll still have Horseradish.

Horseradish hopefully will tie up the sugar bowl deal. If it doesn't that would be really depressing. As for the new editions, it seems just like a gimmick to keep ASOUE up. Now die hard fans can get paperback editions with a few extra quips. It be nice if he just made rare-editions like he did with TBB, and have us all read his personal notes on things in each book.
