I think the chances are she is still alive, Lemony left her death wide open for a reason. Though I side with Question Mark and heavily doubt she'll be heroic. She might have gotten over some of her fears, but heroic? She might be a bit helpful and might even give important information but I don't think she'll have an enormous impact on the last two books, Mr. poe and Bruce didn't, nor did Carmelita(although she did see Fiona and Fernald which kinda ruined the plan...)

And we can never know what exactly was happening to Aunt Josephine as the children sat on the dock, unable to help her,but i will say that eventually-about the time when the Baudelaire were forced to attend a miserable boarding school- two fisherman found both of Aunt Josephine's life jackets, all in tatters and floating alone in the murky waters of lake Lachrymose.

It's implied that she died, certainly, but Snicket's many times plucked something from the first few books and then tied it in with the V.F.D. plot.

Wait... Lemony said "we can never know what happened" So this would seem to imply that although she might not be dead, Lemony won't be writing much about her in the future... Of course, assuming lemony wrote the books in order which isn't necessarily true, he might just not have known at that moment.... I'm making no assumptions at this point but I do think she might be alive and won't be at all surprised if she is or if they find her body floating in the ocean.

Today's clue (August 9th) leads me to believe that Aunt Josephine will be returning. There have been a few clues on TNN.com that have hinted at/had to do with TWW, and Aunt Josephine. Very possible indeed.

Right but she could've escaped on her own being a good swimmer and having extensive knowledge of Lake Lachrymose and its surroundings.

In UA there's a quote about someone saying how inconvinient it is to drown because it is so wet, or something. I thought of Aunt Josephine when I read that.

I'm almost positive that that incident was Olaf drowning Gustav for it was in the Swarthy Swamp. But then again maybe not as that was after trr. But it wouldn't have been Josephine for that was at Swarthy Swamp, not Lake Lachrymose. I'll have to read that part again.

What an enlightening comment.
I'll be disappointed if she does. She was a Monty death, not a Quigley death; her demise added to the bleakness, rather than being a plothook. She was also a martyr to grammar.
We may hear about her (through Gregor, possibly) but if we see her again I'll be irritated. And wrong.

Curious, I started pondering the same thing when I re-read the series for the thousand-and-first time. It could happen, because of the fact that she was wearing two life jackets and was supposed to be a good swimmer as previous posts have stated, and J.S. could be a reference to "Josephine Survives", or maybe that was just a coincidence. I'll say I'm about 52% sure she'll make a re-appearance.
