Unfortunately, while Lemony Snicket is indeed a pen name, the author's real name is Daniel Handler. It is unlikely that Snicket will further muddy the already opaque waters by claiming to be "Joe" Snicket in a future book.

Going back to more serious theories, what about the notion some people have discussed that there are two or more J.S.'s? Call them Jam Jar J.S., Telegram J.S., and Poe's Note J.S.. They could be sharing information (Telegram might tell Poe's Note about Briny Beach, for example). Or they might be on opposing sides and not sharing anything. A communication meant for one could be sent to another. Any or all of them could be evil.
In my "Intractable Interrogator", Jam Jar J.S. = Telegram J.S. = Justice Strauss. Poe's Note J.S. = Jerome Squalor. Both are evil.
"Too many people with the same initials can lead to much injustice."

Poe's Note J.S. = Jerome Squalor. Both are evil. "Too many people with the same initials can lead to much injustice." "Many individuals with the same initials can lead to much injustice." The meaning is slightly different. And I have always believed the multiple-J.S.s theory, and I can't see why more people don't. I think that Jam Jar J.S. and Telegram J.S. are the same person (or were intended for the same person, at least) and Poe's Note J.S. is another, far less trustworthy individual. I also think that the telegram intended for Telegram J.S. was delivered instead to Poe's Note J.S., who was only able to figure out the Briny Beach part (even though I think that that's a bit cheap). Note that this creates double the injustice, for not only does a villain know the information given in the telegram about three volunteers having an important mission, but the person who the telegram was intended for does not know about this.

I agree with most of that. But I waver. As I've said before, Justice Strauss could be all 3, and she may have sent Poe to get the children for a good reason, though having an ulterior motive. She did seem to generally care for them in tbb, showing no hesitation to bring them into her home and anytime they were alone with her she used no threats or unpleasant behavior whatsoever so I don't think she means them harm. Her liking for them and need to have them with her and safe might have even compelled her to deviate from her VFD trust and send the message to Poe in a hope that he would pick them up, clear up the whole thing with their crimes, and then deliver them to her so she could keep them safe. Sure it would mean compromising a VFD operation but she might rather have them safe and not involved with the mission then unsafe and involved with it. Okay that last part isn't making much sense but you can get the gist of it.

I like the hidden motive part, but I do think she means harm. I mean, we don't even know about her, really.

But she had plenty of chances to do them harm in tbb as I said but she didn't. Her wish that they could be safe may have overcome her wish to complete VFD's mission. So long as the children were with her, safe in the here and now she could feel innocent. If people were angry at her she could claim truthfully that she was just looking out for the well-being of 3 charming and innocent children.

If people were angry at her she could claim truthfully that she was just looking out for the well-being of 3 charming and innocent children. Either through treachery, lassez-faire or lack of imagination, she nearly did them harm in TBB, by failing to see through Olaf's marriage scheme. My theory is that she has her own agenda, which doesn't include helping or harming the Baudelaires unless it suits her purposes. It didn't suit her purposes in TBB, but sending Poe after them now, just when the V.F.D. needs them, doesn't look good to me. The ending of TGG implies that going with Poe would not have turned the tables in their lives (as going with Kit did). If Poe was speaking the truth, he intended to turn them over to the police, not to Justice Strauss to be taken care of by her. I don't think he was telling the truth, but if he was the outcome of the Poe intervention would probably have been their arrest.

For once I'm feeling optimistic. I thought Poe was taking them to the police station to CLEAR UP all that nasty false crime stuff so that they'd be free of their supposed crimes.

I thought that he didn't have an opinion on whether they were true or not - if the allegations were true, then the Baudelaires would be arrested and convicted. If they were false, the Baudelaires would be free to go. I doubt Poe really cared - he just wanted to take charge of them, and them being suspected criminals, take them to the most appropriate place.

Perhaps... I just had a fleeting hope that Poe actually wanted to clear them...

Perhaps... I just had a fleeting hope that Poe actually wanted to clear them... Poe's words to them at the end of TGG aren't very encouraging. He says on pp. 317 to 318: "You have a lot of explaining to do."... "It was very inconsiderate of you to run away without telling me where you were, particularly when you've been accused of murder, arson, kidnapping, and some assorted misdemeanors. We're going to get right in my car, and I'll drive you to the police station, and --"Now, suppose Justice Strauss brought this about by sending that "J.S." note to Poe. She didn't sign her full name, so Poe seems completely confused about who the note is from. She didn't provide any instructions other than their location, so Poe has no idea of bringing the Baudelaires to her. As a judge, her legal advice would have been invaluable before being interrogated by the police, but Poe is going to take them directly to the police. Justice Strauss appears somewhat foolish in TBB, but that would reach Poe's own level of incompetence. She's not that dumb. Someone who wanted the Baudelaires out of the way might have sent that note, knowing what Poe would likely do. Or, Poe's lying and he had some other destination in mind than the police.
