Evidence DOES suggest that Esme was in VFD, why would you say absolutely that she wasn't?
And I'm warming up to the idea of VFD pseudonyms being repeatedly used by different members.

I had an idea. Perhaps there was once a man called Julio Sham, and he invented that particular disguise, and now, his name is used whenever the disguise is used. Or perhaps there was a captain called Julio Sham who VFD decided to impersonate, for some reason.

Evidence for Esmé being in V.F.D. is ambiguous. She didn't know the coded coffee stain, although that can be explained as an unofficial code, seeing as Widdershins taught it to Olivia rather than a V.F.D. instructor teaching it to both of them. Her childhood doesn't sound very V.F.D. - I think they'd object to their subjects throwing copies of Anna Karenina into fires, but then again, they might not know. In terms of evidence for, then she invaded the Building Committee meeting alongside Olaf, and she seems to know plenty of V.F.D. secrets - but one might argue that she doesn't actually need to be a volunteer for this to happen. The evidence goes both ways.
I, however, believe that she was in V.F.D.
PJ, your ideas are too similar to the normal proposed theory, which is the one I object to.

I don't think there was ever a 'real julio sham' I mean, the name itself suggests otherwise.
And Esme having to read Anna Karenina but throwing it into the fire brings to mind that she could've been something of a rebellious neophyte who, before she could truly be initiated into VFD, joined up with Olaf as the schism began, at least that's how I interpret it.

Regarding your first point, I have repeatedly suggested that "Sham" is a piece of irony not to be taken too simplistically. Besides, were it a disguise name, it would, to an extent, be Sham.
Your second point I'm in agreement with, though.

Murder is unnecessary. Even I don't kill dissenters for no reason....
And I'm really tired of the whole sham thing. It's really not that important, and there's no point debating it endlessly, chances are not much is going to be revealed about it...

Dear Darth Linda,
All Esme knows is from Olaf.

Well then my opinion is that I doubt it's important and that it's cumbersome and pointless to debate such a small detail that's so far appeared in only one book, perhaps 2.

JS stands for many people. Their names are:
Justice Strauss Jacques Snicket Jake Snicket Jerome Squalor or maybe some one else.

Ugh, you're doing it AGAIN. No way it stands for ALL of those people but yes there could be multiple JS's involved in this...

That last quote is very true but the rest of them are nonsense. May I ask what the point of that post was?

I'm on your side, if you but knew it. I'm mocking jwhateversebald's posts. Now I have to explain my witticisms, they aren't funny any more. I think I might join BSam and turn to alcoholism...
