Well of course there's no debate as to whether the volunteers call her R. But I think it stems from the incorrect assumption that her symbol thing is just a fancy R.

I don't get where a lot of fanon here comes from, but I blame that on not having read TBL. Speaking of which, my library's getting it in in a couple of weeks!

Good luck reading TBL, Charlie... although a lot of fanon does seem to come from nowhere but readers' heads. That's what makes it fanon rather than something hinted at in canon.

A lot of mine is things worked out to overcome discrepancies in the books. ATWQ is rather messing that up, of course.
And yes, I hope you enjoy TBL. It's my favourite Snicket book.

I have this weird headcanon that Stew Mitchum is Carmelita’s uncle and married Bruce. He was the one saying “Come back to bed” in TPP.

1. The wart-faced man was the cleverest of Count Olaf's associates. Too clever, in fact, so Olaf got rid of him between TBB and TRR. 2. The horseradish factory also manufactures applesauce. 3. Aunt Josephine is still alive. She was a very good swimmer. 4. All the lumbar mill workers are ex-cons. Except Phil. 5. Prufrock Prep used to be the academy for V.F.D. until the principal mysteriously vanished. 6. The other elevator has a secret passageway, too. It leads to Caligary Carnival. 7. Hector's brother was Ike, and his sister is Geraldine. (GHI) 8. Heimlich Hospital is named after the Heimlich maneuver. 9. Madame Lulu's table could not hold all the information she had gathered over the years. She stored older material in a secret compartment beneath her tent. It is still there, under the ashes. 10. The white-faced women survived, becoming make-up artists in Hollywood. 11. It is Captain Widdershins' fault the hook-handed man lost his hands. 12. The mysterious taxi driver is Lemony Snicket. 13. Ishmael is Mr. Poe's father, but Mr. Poe never met him and believes himself to be an orphan, like the Baudelaires.

8. Heimlich Hospital is named after the Heimlich maneuver. …isn't it? I always thought it was another case of Handler sneaking allusions and puns in his characters' and places' names, just like with "Caligari Carnival".
