I'm beginning to think that now there simply isn't room left in the series to accomodate her return.... She could have survived but... given how late it is I'm not so sure anymore.

Call me crazy because this does sound crazy, even to me. But I have this wacked-out theory that everyone Olaf *supposedly* killed are still alive and well, but we won't see them again in the series except for MAYBE Aunt Josephine (please pardon the caps). But, if Handler makes sort of a series epilogue, it can explain exactly how the fire started, if there was a reason, why, if either or both the Baudelaire parents are still alive, and maybe if she turns up again, how Josephine survived. Once again, don't hate me for this theory!

In the Wide Window, it said "when the children were at a horrible boarding school, two fishermen found her life jacket in tatters flooting alone in the murky water" There is a HUGH chance that someone found her(Snicket)with her life jacket still on. Remember this woman was scared of everything. She could have been fighting with the person who saved her, in the process ripping the life jacket to tatters.

The torn life jackets are a very ambigious clue, though. From those alone, we can't tell if Josephine is dead or alive, or where she is. All we know is that the leeches got her life jackets.

Exactly. but.... the leeches wouldn't go after the life jackets would they? They'd go straight to the person so why would they be in tatters... Now I'm thinking other violence may be involved but I'm also thinking Lemony isn't really going to explain more about what happened.

The leeches have very sharp teeth, and there were loads of them. They'd probably just have bitten at whatever came near, especially if it was standing in the way of delicious human flesh.

I just read something in the UA.
It's about the possibility of Ike being alive. In the Duchess' letter to Kit, she mentions getting the letters to Ike, who is in a safe place. Underlined is something about her being unable to write to Lemony at the time. This implies it is written at the same time as the Chapter 2 letter. The Chapter 2 letter says that Lemony is already researching the Baudelaires. Therefore, Ike could be alive.

Fair evidence, but - no, wait, fair evidence. That is interesting. Could be a chronological inconsistency, though.

Good discovery, Sixteen. However, it could be one of the chronological inconsistencies noted/admitted/implied by the frequent "...could not possibly have been at the same time" phrases in the UA.

That's true. I wonder if it will be discovered in Book the Twelfth.

SPOILER COMING!!!!!! idk...maybe all of their previous guardians who were supposedly "killed" are actually alive...also...something else...as far fetched as it may be... I wonder if this is all just a test that the orphans have to pass in order to see if they are fit to join VFD... after all... it is strongly implied in UA that the members were origianally children and in TPP olaf is said to be an orphan...

That theory has been speculated befor devotee, and I would hate such an ending it would ruin the books in my opinion.
