I think everyone, in their own ways, are misunderstood. But if I had to choose, I would probably go with Fernald. He is quite mysterious. No one really knows what his true intentions are. The only person who seems to really know what goes on in his head is Fiona. And possibly Captain Widdershins, to an extent.

"I think it's possible she is the swimming woman; seeing her again might give the captain enough of a shock to make him desert his post."
That's actually a very interesting theory. I haven't thought of that before. But wasn't that Duchess R? A lot of other people seem to think it was her. But Mrs. Widdershins is an interesting theory as well.

I've always just thought of the series as steam-punk, and not really belonging to any period.

I actually like these covers. I'm curious as to what all the others would look like.

Yeah I agree, I really wanted to see some kind of reunion between them and the Baudelaire's. Even if it was just spotting them up in the hot-air mobile home, anything would have been satisfying. But obviously, Handler knew what he was doing when he wrote the series, so we just have to accept it for what it is. And yes! Dewey, I also became quite fond of him, and we only get to know him for like, a couple of chapters. But you're right, Handler does have a knack for creating likable characters in just a short amount of time.

I actually really liked the cover. It's different, yet quirky and somewhat dark. Which I think fits. But I'm not going to lie, I still really miss Helquist.

Yeah, not funny. And I too have noticed that British people seem to take the piss out of them the most. But why?

I only just finished book the 13th a few months ago, a little late I know. However, I must say that I was a bit saddened and shocked upon finishing the last book and realizing that we only see Duncan and Isadora for three books, and then..... that's it. Somewhere in the back of my mind I kept thinking that we were going to see them again, at least one last time, either in TPP or TE. I kept thinking it would be either those two books or at least TE that we would finally see both them and Hector still up in their hot-air mobile home being spotted by the Baudelaire's or something. But no... they take off in the mobile home in TVV, and you never see them again. You only hear about them being swallowed up by the "Great Unknown", along with the others. I'm not shocked anymore of course, but I'm still sad. It's amazing how in just three short books I could grow attached to those characters, but I did. Even Quigley who we only really see in TSS was someone I thought would finally be a good friend for the Baudelaire's. And I was also sad to realize the same fate happened to him, before he could see any of them again.
Did anyone else have the same reaction when they finished the series? And the funny thing is that it wasn't until after the series ended that it actually dawned on me, and I thought "hey wait a minute, we never saw them again!" And I'm still sad for them.

These are sort of the titles I made up a while back, if they ever did finish the provisional titles for the paperback series. They're kind of silly but I did it just for fun. After TAA: 6. The Ersatz Elevator; or, Trapped! 7. The Vile Village; or, Framed! 8. The Hostile Hospital; or, Operation! 9. The Carnivorous Carnival; or, Mauled! 10. The Slippery Slope; or, Survivor! 11. The Grim Grotto; or, Poisoned! 12. The Penultimate Peril; or, Burned! 13. The End; or, Finale!

Thanks Dante. I thought you were being sarcastic with me at first. (LOL) I do consider myself to be an open-minded person, and I like thinking outside the box. I love hearing other people's theories about certain topics.

Wow, well Dante it wasn't until you said that her picture is on the COVER of TAA that now I can see her hair is quite red. I'ts funny but I never once noticed it until you mentioned it. Her picture is quite small so that's probably why. I've just always been so focused on the Baudelaire's and Vice Principal Nero, since they obviously stand out. And to Brunch, I definitely agree, that the great thing about Handler is that he never really describes what any of the characters look like. And I actually prefer that. Like you said it gives readers a chance to make the characters into our own imagination.

"I've always pictured her as a red-head."
But is that what she is originally suppose to be? It's kind of funny actually, because of the Helquist drawing I've mentioned, ever since she was brought into the storyline I always picture her as having very dark brunette, almost black hair. I can't get that imagine out of my head, that's how I've always seen her as. But does anyone know what she was suppose to be? I'm just curious.

Is she a red-head or dark brunette? In some pictures/drawings she has dark brunette hair, but then in others she has red hair. The Helquist drawing in TAA right before chapter one, (American edition) has a drawing of what appears to be Carmelita standing in front of the school's motto and she looks like she has black hair (of course it's a black and white drawing, so it's hard to tell what Helquist was really going for, but still); in others even in color I've seen her with very dark hair, but then in others it's red. But which is it? Which one is suppose to be her "real" hair color?

Hmm, possibly more than one sugar bowl? That's interesting, I've never thought about that before!

I agree, that there are many different J.S's and some are volunteers and others are villains. Although I was sort of hoping for a much clearer answer toward the end of the series, but oh well. Handler knew what he was doing when he wrote the books so he knew we would have to come to our own conclusions.
